I have been involved in my school’s Link Crew program since my junior year of high school. Through this program I have been able to help incoming freshmen adjust to the high school environment, and have gained skills in leadership and public speaking for myself. I helped out with students during their lessons. I was able to work with the same student for several weeks, and I looked forward to seeing their improvements each week. It was such an eye-opening experience for me to see just how much the riding affected the students and helped with their conditions. During my time as a volunteer, I gained a lot of knowledge on the effects of therapeutic riding and how beneficial it can be to the disabled. (94)

Although I’m lucky to live in a community where discrimination is not very prevalent, it’s something that I know exists. I didn’t see it until my freshman year of high school when I made friends with a Muslim girl. I noticed how people sometimes treated her differently. Recently she moved to California and after the Paris attack, someone threw rocks at my friend’s house. I learned that I might not see racism happening, but it’s occurring to people around me. I think it’s important to stand by my friend’s side and hope it encourages others to look past her appearance and religion and see that she is not any
