It is believed that that the way to be human being is to be humane but as we look down to our history it is crystal clear that humans have brought much pain, suffering and crisis to other humans. In a crisis, people respond in different ways that reveal characteristics of human nature. In the short story, This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen, Tadeusz Borowski has narrated his experience in a concentration camp during the Second World War. Borowski who is a kommando in the camp encounters different kinds of people who show characteristics like bravery, fear, empathy, brutality and many more. In this story when Borowski was clearing the dead bodies of infants and women, he felt hate and horror, and so he was hesitant in doing it. The S.S man was going to shoot him but a woman stepped in, who smiled at him and called him a poor boy, and carried the dead body of the infant away. This shows that even though that women in much pain and suffering, she still have empathy for other human beings. There are also a kind of people who remain calm and bold even in adversities. In this story Borowski encounters a young girl with enchanting looks who is not afraid of what was going to happen to her next. She was just like a fish in river who is flowing with the direction of current of the water. She proudly said that she knew what was going to happen to her and this displays that she is courageous enough even to face her death with a smile on her face. Furthermore, in a crisis a human can find peace and satisfaction in such things that are cursed by others. Borowski states, “I lie against the cool, kind metal…I see the camp as a haven of peace” (43). Borowski was tired by clearing out dead bodies all the day and so when he lied down, in the evening, to rest he saw the camp as a place of peace where he was alive, had enough food and strength to
