Human service professionals measure growth in numerous areas: financial resources, human resources, services and programs, customer satisfaction, and partnerships. Sometimes there is a sixth area – a nonprofit organization measures if the organization fulfilled it mission, and a for-profit organization measures shareholder value (Harley-McClaskey, 2017). Financial resources can vary according to the organization’s structure. For example, taxes and grants fund government organizations, service charges and donors fund nonprofit organizations, and investors and charges fund for-profit companies. Human resources includes paid part-time and full-time staff, and a nonprofit organization includes volunteers. Services, products, and programs are developed for customers, including individuals and communities. Financial growth is apparent in the budget, debt, funding, and revenues (Harley-McClaskey, 2017). Human resources includes employee turnover rate and number of job openings. It is concerned with employees’ understanding of the organization’s mission and values relates to their roles. Another concern is if the programs and services are fulfilling needs and producing desired outcomes (Harley-McClaskey, 2017). Customer satisfaction includes how highly customers rate the organization, if they recommend it to others, and how the organization compares with others. Organizations demonstrate growth through partnerships if their leaders work with other organizations and leaders, help the community grow and serve as experts.
