Having freedom can change the course of anyone’s life. People find it so important since they want to be in control of themselves and be able to do what they want. Some types of freedom are more beneficial to certain people than others. One of these freedoms is personal freedom, which allows individuals to express themselves and make choices in their life. These different types of freedoms are portrayed by characters in the novel I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez. One of the characters, Julia, is a teenage girl who yearns for independence and to go her own way, but is held back by her overprotective mother. She’s a person who would find freedom important to her life. Julia is an independent teenager and wants her parents to let her go anywhere she wishes, but regardless, her mom disagrees. Personal freedom would unlock many places, opening up options Amá prevents her from having. She even goes as far as to keep Julia locked out of her deceased sister, Olga’s, room. After getting caught looking around the room, she was grounded and stopped from returning. After this happens, Julia says, “I can’t go into Olga’s room… Amá installed a lock and I can’t find the key.” (Sanchez, 27) Amá stops her from looking through the room as she pleases.
