Jackie Robinson is an interesting character in the book I Never Had It Made. He displays several qualities which make him an interesting character. Jackie is mentally strong. This is evident throughout the book from the verbal abuse in baseball to the encounters with racist people everywhere he goes. Jackie is also a trailblazer. We witness this throughout the book from when he is the first African American to play baseball to when he works with political campaigns. Lastly, Jackie is also rebellious. The author shows this throughout the book from when he refuses to move seats on the bus to when he marches in protests.
Jackie Robinson is mentally strong. In this novel, we see this throughout the entire story, but a specific example is when he is playing baseball in chapter two and four. He went onto the field and the crowd booed and called him names. This shows that Jackie is mentally strong because he just took the insults and did not retaliate. Furthermore, when Jackie Jr. dies on page 244, Jackie shows he is mentally strong by not letting it take his life all apart and not letting it ruin everything. Finally, when he was in the military he was mentally strong because he had to deal with the racist officials which we saw on page 14. We see this throughout the entire story, but a specific example is when he is told to move to the back of the bus and he didn’t on page 19. This shows Jackie is rebellious because during that time it was expected that he move to the back so when he didn’t that caused issues. Another example of Jackie being rebellious is when he speaks for the NAACP in chapter 10 because they rebel against what the whites want.
