The underlying issue in this week's "newsstorm" is immigration. I strongly believe in legal immigration. I was adopted as an infant in Germany and my parents brought me legally to the United States. My wife and I adopted two children internationally and legally brought them to the United States. We then adopted a third child who was born to an illegal resident in the United States, who we were privileged to care for through the foster system. In each of these cases there was great time, love and expense invested in these immigrants, including me, becoming legally and culturally Americans. We have education, the language and can positively contribute to the society.

Our country does not have the resources to care for anyone and everyone, as indicated by our massive debts and continued spending on benefits for those who contribute nothing back in taxes. Further, we are not assimilating these alien residents into our culture. Many, many who come here are not interested in becoming Americans. An immigrant is not a resident who feeds off the nation-state and does not contribute to it with their life. That is a resident-alien. An immigrant is one who comes wanting to become an American. An immigrant does not try to re-create their culture here, rather they adopt the culture of their new home country. For those who want E Pluribus Unum, we have a legal system for doing so that works. If we took in a hundred million poor next year--grew our population by 25% by taking in the impoverished, well there would still be a billion more who live on less than $1 a day. That billion would produce another hundred million to replace those we took in within 10 years. We would have solved nothing by this, and would bankrupt ourselves in the process.
