My immigration and refugee policy would be based around one central idea: acceptance of responsibility. For too long, Americans have spent their energy on hateful words, instead of on helpful action. There must be a link of trust between immigrants and natives, and my policy would be marked by making sure that each understands the expectations of their responsibility going in. I would take special care to create an open and frank explanation to the country about the number of immigrants coming in, what they were to do once they got here, and what the country was expected to do in return. This is not true. In the same way that many Germans choose to neglect the fact that immigration has been ongoing for centuries (Willis, 72), especially post World War II, Americans seem to ignore the fact that immigration is no new thing. And, the number of undocumented immigrants isn't going down anytime soon (Beinhart, 61). In addition to setting up general laws for immigrants, such as needing to have a job, and needing to go to classes to gain their citizenship (I do not believe that people should come to stay in a country without intending to become a citizen and gain rights). I would also set up regulations for immigrant-heavy areas, such as workforce rights and wage control. Immigrants must be given a legitimate job- one where they can work their way up in the workforce to contribute to the economy and to aid their own life. A major argument against immigration is that “large increases in the number of low-skill workers [...] means a fall in wages” (Beinhart, 62). By making sure that immigrants are given jobs that have the possibility for advancement, we can limit this fall in wages in the long-term.
