Three Characters That Have Major Impacts on Enzo’s Life "Gestures are all that I have; sometimes they must be grand in nature." Imagine not being able to talk to the people you love the most, not being able to say thank you for everything they have done. In Garth Stein’s novel The Art of Racing in the Rain, three characters that have a major impact on Enzo’s life are Denny, Eve and Zoe. First, in Stein’s novel, Denny impacts Enzo’s life a lot by leaving the TV on for Enzo, Enzo states “until one day, when a fortunate accident happened that changed my life, Denny turned on the TV in the morning to check the weather report and forgot to turn the TV off” (Stein 32). Denny leaving the TV on for Enzo allows him to learn stuff about the world he would not normally know. It also allows him to have something to do when nobody is home. In addition, Enzo also states “let me tell you this: the weather channel is not about weather; it is about the world! It is about how weather affects us all, our entire global economy, health, happiness, spirit”(Stein 32). Eve impacts Enzo’s life when she loses her life, it allows Enzo to feel real human emotions such as anger and sadness. Enzo proves this by saying “I am not a dog who runs away from things. I had never run away from Denny before that moment, and I have never run away since. But in that moment, I had to run”(Stein 164). Enzo never feels like running away, but at that moment, he runs away from Denny because he loses control over his “doglike” emotions and is overwhelmed by his and Denny’s sadness.
