The Importance of Continuing to Offer Band in Schools When choosing one of the three topics to write about for this scholarship it was difficult to choose from the list of, why music is important to me, the importance of continuing to offer band in school, and how music will be a part of my life as I leave high school. This is because when you are first starting out learning and even once you have learned how to play, you will always have blunders that happen while you are trying to learn new songs or trying to reach unfamiliar notes, yet any good musician will keep trying until they will eventually reach that goal. Not only can band help new students adapt to the new changes with high school but, band can be a period of the day that can allow students to have a moment during their normal school day that they can relax and take their mind off of anything that might be bothering them, by focusing solely on music. Being able to meet new people and de-stress is just a small portion of the benefits to mental health that students can earn from joining band, studies have shown that instrumentalists are focused more and less prone to aggression than non-musicians, and suffer from fewer stress related symptoms, such as burnout, headaches, high blood pressure and lower immune function. It is extremely important to keep band in schools because yes students can choose to take up learning an instrument later in life but they will struggle to find the motivation to stick with it, not only this but the previously listed benefits of joining band are most impactful on younger students, so if band is removed form schools, many students are losing these incredible benefits that they could not earn later in
