Marching Band is rapidly becoming a sport. Some people believe that marching band is not a sport while some believe it is. Marching band falls under the sports category, according to the Oxford dictionary Marching band is a sport, because a sport is something involving physical exertion where people can compete against others. Some people think that marching band is not a sport because it doesn’t take any physical ability. This way of thinking is reasonable because it doesn’t seem like marching band is difficult.
Marching band a sport? Many people would say that is a crazy idea while others may understand it completely. Marching band is playing a musical instrument while marching a certain way to a tempo. Marching band is a form of entertainment that competes at competitions against other marching bands. Myself, knowing what marching band is and how it works from personal experience, marching band should be considered a sport.
Did you know that marching band members spend so much time putting drill on the field for an entire summer break?The Friday nights, and Saturday afternoons we spend on a football field? The energy, sweat, and pride we put onto a football field or parking lot? All this, but unfortunately, marching band is still known for an “elective”.
One article says that being in a band elective is very good for learning about competitiveness, whether that competition is in marching band where they are competing against other schools, or if it’s a solo audition (Krache). This helps students prepare for the future where they have to compete for something like a job, a raise, etc. Another way that they are beneficial for students’ futures is that students create tight bonds with their peers and learn how to be serious about something but also have fun while doing it (Krache). This helps students in the future when they need to be able to get along with their co-workers while also being professional. Finally, music electives help students prepare for the future because it helps them learn about how important it is to follow through with their commitments (Krache).
That’s what being a band member is all about you have to multitask all the time. Sun beaming in your face, mostiqos buzzing in your ear what could get any better than spending your free time like that? Just like any other sports practice, band practice is held almost every day. Once you join band, it's time to say goodbye to your social life.
Band and Choir can be related to the arts. Using your imagination and hearing the chords can create a picture in your head. Students will learn teamwork, you need to be able to listen around you for other students so you can blend to make one voice or one tone. Students will have a better knowledge of self-confidence.
It is a crucial staple of high school because it encourages many qualities that are essential for college and beyond. The problem programs are facing now, is that fewer and fewer schools are integrating marching band into their programs because they are either uninterested or the District does not want to provide the funds. It has been proven students who participate in marching band receive a much richer musical education and are much more disciplined in other aspects of their education, music
It’s been proven many times that music activities help students in a variety of ways, so it is essential to take advantage of the resources that are available to further their success. It may cost more money, but it is a well-invested way to support students. First off, music activities boost students’ performances in other school subjects, whether it be grades, standardized test scores, or other classwork. Secondly, participating in the arts has been proven to help with a person’s health, both mental and physical. Lastly, the arts help to strengthen and improve several areas of the brain, leaving sustaining life-long impacts for many people.

Marching Band is Indeed a Sport When we think of sports we think of games like football or soccer but no one ever considers if band is a sport, people just think oh the instruments at halftime, that's so easy, no way its a sport, Well i'm here to tell you your wrong marching band is a sport through the physical exertion, amount of skill required and in the way the band is given points. One reason why band is a sport is, when playing and practicing marching band players go through rigorous amounts of physical exertion. “While a trumpet weighs about 2 pounds, arms must be held up continuously, putting stress on neck, back, shoulders, and arms for 7 to 10 minutes”(Koehler).
Musicians are “great problem solvers in school and social situations” because they have a stronger corpus callosum, the part of the brain that connects the two halves.(Berman) When an outsider joins band their minds are opened into a whole new world. This is because when a person is making music there is not only one place in the brain that is being activated. A musician is using parts of the brain that have to do with the visual, auditory, and motor functions of the brain. People who play a musical instrument are working multiple parts of their brain at once making it easier for them to remember information more.
To the average person, the high school marching band is nothing more than a bunch of geeks that play during half time at the football games or monopolize the benches by the band hall, but to me, it is so much more. To me it is a family, a safe haven, a creative outlet, a home. I have been involved in marching band for three years, going on four, and I wouldn 't trade the experience for anything. When I entered high school as a scared and awkward freshman, I immediately had three hundred people that I could rely on. The program quickly became like a second home to me and opened up a whole new path in my life.
When you think of sports, marching band is not necessarily something that comes to mind but should definitely be included in the category of a sport. First, marching band fits the definition of a sport by being physically exerting and requiring skill. A marching band not only consists of band members that play instruments, but also include the color guard. The color guard is a section of the band that does not play an instrument but uses props, flags or other items to enhance the visual appeal of the performance. Most times they can do as much, if not more, work than the members that play instruments.
EXODUS 31:16-17 “”The Israelites must observe the Sabbath, celebrating it throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign forever between Me and the Israelites, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.””. Because God rested, so must I in favor of respecting His actions. The Sabbath is a covenant with God. By accepting this covenant with God, I am sustaining my harmony with God.
The average student at UW will probably tell you that marching band is “cool,” but for Janice Stone it’s the best thing that she did in college besides receive a degree. Janice Stone, an avid musician has been part of the marching band at UW since 1986 when she joined as Junior. The year prior to joining the marching band, she learned to play the tuba. She became the first female tuba player the next year. Now, 51-years-old, she teaches instrumental music to middle and high school students in the Monona Grove School District and volunteers as a field assistant for the UW Marching Band.
Participating in music brings many benefits to each individual. Fine arts may be seen as a waste of money to some, however, schools should continue to fund and support these programs to foster future musicians. Students gain knowledge while participating in extracurriculars which is a benefit to fine arts programs. Music teaches students in ways other core subjects cannot. Being a member of an ensemble- instrumental, vocal, or dramatic- can teach teamwork.
