Direct observation is used when the other data collection procedures like survey, questionnaires, etc. are not effective. The aim of direct observation is to evaluate the process of on-going behaviour, event and situation.
In this observation, the subject in the environment is unaware of the purpose of the observation. It’s a structured direct observation which is used in quantitative research.
Components of the method
Moderator or researcher: the observer who observes the behaviour or in simple words one who is recording the observations.
Respondents (student-teacher interaction): it is the behaviour which is to be observed without any personal bias and interest. The scope of observation is limited to the interaction taking place between students and teachers.
Recording sheet: a note pad is required to wright down the observed data. It is not possible to note down all the observation instantly so better to use jotting points and immediately after completion of task it should be completed in structured sentence.
