Groups are an integral part of social work. Social workers work both in groups and with groups of people. Therefore, it is essential that social workers learn all the ins and outs of working with groups. In our classroom exercise this week, we were divided into groups and then given three different tasks to complete. My group consisted of myself, Lauren, Selena, Taylor and Destiny. Our first task was to create rules for our group. After a lot of deliberation and some confusion about how to present our rules, we decided on five main rules. The rules of our group were 1) be respectful of time 2) be mindful when engaging in the group 3) be respectful of everyone’s differences 4) respect everyone 's personal space and 5) do not speak over one another. In groups, there are several roles that members may fulfill. The analyzer conceptualizer clarifies the aims of the group and envisions the final product. The analyzer conceptualizer also reviews and evaluates the final product, helping to plan for the next task. Another role that is present in groups is the role of planner. A planner essentially states what needs to be done and specifies the way things need to be done. The last role, is the role of a doer. Doers act on what is supposed to be done according to plan. During the first rule making exercise, I was a doer. After we all collaborated making the rules, I began to make my creative representation of the rule I suggested, which was to be mindful.
