The GPA requirement for the scholarship application was 3.0, but at the time I only had a 2.78 high school GPA. The application also required an essay, which also made me even more nervous to apply. I decided it was best I attempted, and the worst they would do is decline my application. I followed through with the idea and submitted my scholarship application to the counseling office the following day. I later discovered information about financial aid and decided to explore it further. My grandma had a fixed income, and I knew there was no chance of her putting me through school, so I tried to complete my FAFSA. As I was filling out the FAFSA, I encountered some issues. I was under guardianship care and later found out that I was never legally adopted. I didn’t want to ask my grandmother or other family members for help. If they knew I was trying to get personal information to go to college, they would not support my decision. So at that point, I gave up. I did not want to stress the matter anymore, and I had secured my fate of never going to college. Two months later, I was called down to the counselor’s office to be awarded second place for the Beat the Odds Scholarship by the scholarship sponsor. I was awarded $2,000.00 to apply towards any school of my choice. A young girl like me never thought in a million years I would have money to go to
