Fast Food Nation Fast food restaurants are not all they’re cracked up to be. Fast Food Nation, written by Eric Schlosser, is an attempt to link the American eating style and food-production patterns. Schlosser presents an interesting perspective on how societies adapt to the way food is produced. He simply informs us how large the fast food industry is and how we are allowing it to grow. As the fast food industry grew the demand for hot, ready food was rising at substantial rates shortly after World War two.
These food industries were smart to target youth because they are “still establishing their tastes and habits” (Schlosser, 2001, p. 54). The youth really don’t stand a chance these days against fast food advertisement, which, by extension, means that their parents don’t either. Fast food is the cheapest and easiest source of food to access in America. It’s quick to get and tastes very good. Adolescents consume fast food on a regular basis, due to the wide accessibility and affordability of the food. While fast food is cheap, there are limited nutrients and subsistence in the food. Chemicals and carcinogens are commonly found in the ingredients used to produce Fast Food.
These factors include the percentage of people who has busy lives. Those who are busy prefer to eat from food chains than cooking at home. So the growing number of busy people in a social fabric can influence Arby’s. Most People are workaholic nowadays; therefore, there is more tendency of eating out. Thus, it turns to be an opportunity for the food chains like Arby’s.
In Margaret Visser’s essay, “The Rituals of Fast Food”, she explains the reason why customers enjoy going to fast food restaurants and how it adapt to customer’s needs. Some examples of the most loyal fast-food customers are people seeking convenience, travelers, and people who are drug addicts. First, most loyal customers are people seeking convenience. The reason why fast food restaurants are convenient because longer hours of being open, the prices are good , etc. As Visser said in her essay, “Convenient, innocent simplicity is what the technology, the ruthless politics, and the elaborate organization serve to the customer” (131).
Fast food restaurants should not be held responsible for the health of Americans. It baffles me that so many people want to blame McDonalds for obesity when we as adults chose what we eat. I will be the first to admit that I am addicted to fast food and I know that I am overweight. I am to blame for that, not fast food restaurants. I am the one that decides to go out to eat, I am the one who decides what I order, and I am the one who physically eats the food.
If we look through the commercial, it talks about the affordability of food. For example, commercial says “two sandwiches”. In the commercial it says that we could get two sandwiches for just five dollars and we could get food for the good price. These kind of commercial attract middle class families, who mainly trust on fast food restaurants for their food. These cheap price ranges of fast food allow more middle class families and low income families to fast food restaurants.
Fast food is considered popular because it 's convenient, it 's cheap, and it tastes good. But the real cost of eating fast food never appears on the menu. Fast food marketers marketing to children and adolescents has skyrocketed throughout the last century. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, funded by the government, "In the United States, the percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has more than tripled since the 1970 's" ("Healthy Schools"). In fact, this statistic is predicted to increase significantly as fast food restaurants are continuously being built everywhere in the U.S. Fast food restaurants are everywhere.
