I have personally improved in writing papers because coming from a background where English was not as important, I had to struggle to learn American English language. In India, I was taught English as my second language and the English I learned in India was British English. British English and American English are two different things because the pronunciation, grammar, and spellings vary. Learning something that you already know and learning something similar in way to something you already know is struggle. I personally wrote so many “Child drafts” like the Anne Lamott mentioned, but I needed a lot of help in shaping my papers
In “Five Myths About Writing”, the section discussed beliefs that caused issues when students were learning how to write. Four out of the five, I already knew they were false. For example, you have to know your topic before you write. It doesn’t matter what genre it is, as long as you are continuing to write, you can figure out your point throughout time. Many bestselling authors would not know what the ending of their novel was at first.

Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I did not worry about preparing for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not enough for college courses. Writing is not just a skill that I will need for English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate with professors.
During my college career I have been doing a wide variety of writing. All of which have assisted shaping as well as molding me into an effective writer. Some of the classes that helped improve my limits to excel as a writer are my English 280 class, intro to Computer Science class, and lastly Juvenile Justice Class. I have done a few segments of writing in the three semesters of law enforcement class that I have taken here at WIU. Never would I have thought that the three major writing assignments that would shape and influence me into the writer I am today would come from of my LEJA classes, but they have.
I generally begin my pre-writing with a healthy dose of procrastination, much like what I am doing right at this very moment. This is unfortunately due to an inherent flaw in my psyche, a crack in my foundation if you will, so there’s not much I can really do about it. I love pre-writing because I get to procrastinate on the actual writing portion by spending a ridiculous amount time on researching and building my outlines. Contrary to what you might think, my prewriting actually tends to be highly organized.
Writing process is difficult to realize since it requires a lot of skills and knowledge. Definitely, not many of us can start writhing right away without having any problems such as grammar, vocabulary or organization. However, a person can become a better writer if he or she will practice writing every day and will pay attention to his writing problems. To become a good writer, I have to improve my grammar, follow specific steps in writing process, and avoid using similar transitional words. Grammar is the number one problem in the writing process and causes me a lot of issues.
Many students of all ages have issues with writing, the only way to get better at writing is to have experience. I never paid much attention to my writing skills while in high school, I simply did not care about writing. This year as a freshman in college, I have struggled with writing this semester in GSW 1100. Even though I have not been passing papers, I understand that writing in college is extremely important to learn and develop. This is important because most courses in college have writing in them.
English 1121 has helped me to become an enhanced reader and writer. I now have confidence in my writing and reading abilities. I never realized that I could become a good writer. A tremendous amount of effort was put forth into each of my papers and I asked questions whenever I was frazzled. I strived for success.
Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. In the beginning of the course I felt like I was an “ok” writer, but lacked some skills such as: organization, sentence variety, and vocabulary. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level.
The comments from my instructor, the online material, my research, the online writing center and comments from other students in the discussion boards have helped me so much to improve my writing skills. In the writing process, the step that I feel I have improved a lot is editing, as I am constantly reading my writings and editing them as I finish them, over and over again before I publish them. The steps in the writing process that I like the most are finding a topic in the Pre-writing step and Drafting. I like having a lot of ideas floating around and think about which idea is the best and the most exciting topic to talk about.
Skills such as proper grammar and MLA format still need some adjustment. Even though I have things to improve, I was still able to improve some areas of my writing skills regardless even if it was a small improvement. In the beginning, like
