Impulsive Behaviors In Romeo And Juliet

Teens are frequently described as impetuous. This can be interpreted in numerous ways, including impulsive behaviors such as crime, drugs, or anything unhealthy and/or dangerous. This could also refer to impulsive behaviors such as mood swings, compulsive behavior, and excessive speech. For hundreds of years and in many various time periods, teenagers have been known to be impulsive. There are several legends throughout history that depict teenagers as rash and unreasonable. Romeo and Juliet is one of the most renowned of these stories. William Shakespeare wrote his play Romeo and Juliet about two star-crossed lovers who were destined to live and die together. Whether it be now or 200 years ago teenage impulsivity still has its consequences like it did for Romeo and Juliet, similarly as it has for our current society. Romeo and Juliet were destined lovers, which meant they would go to any length to be together. This was their greatest strength as well as their greatest weakness. It is made clear from the start that Romeo and Juliet would do just about anything in order to be together in their frantic tale of love. Despite this, some of the things which both of them are willing to do can be put off as desperate impulsivity. An excellent example of this was when Romeo learned the news of Juliet’s “death” and within a moment made the brazen decision to quickly end his own life to join his lover in death. “Is it e’en so?—Then I deny you, stars!—/Thou knowest my lodging. Get me ink and paper,/ And hire post-horses. I will hence tonight” (5.1.25-27). This rash split second decision ends up backfiring on Romeo after he learns that Juliet is in fact alive but unfortunately for him it was already too late. A big problem that has taken over America in recent years is the excessive number of school shootings that occur on a daily basis around the country. The majority of these shootings are planned by students at the schools. “Six of the nine deadliest mass shootings in the United States since 2018 were by people who were 21 or younger, representing a shift for mass casualty shootings, which before 2000 were most often initiated by men in their mid-20s, 30s and 40s” (Thrush & Richtel 4). In relative history, social media has become a staple in an average teenger’s life which has its benefits, however it also comes with a set of problems on its own. Teenagers are at a point in their life where they are exploring new things and opinions which are amplified in a way by the things which teenagers see on social media. Whether this be an idea or some sort of trend, it can often have a greater impact on a teen than it can on anyone else. Another root cause of this is often the people which a teen spends their time with.
