The nursing profession has always been known for its attitudes to others, which encompasses the behaviors of being caring and compassionate. Nevertheless, what many of the individuals do not realize is that the actions of incivility among other nurses occur discreetly, whether it be in an institutional or practice setting. Incivility, in the world of nursing, is one of the most essential and difficult problems to approach. Throughout this discussion, it will entail what incivility is and why it occurs, whom are the most vulnerable, and how can nurse leaders address this issue. Due to these circumstances, it creates a buildup of emotions, leading to the displacement of feelings towards nursing students and novice nurses. Therefore, as contentious manners continue to circulate, so do the behaviors of workplace incivility. Other factors that play a role in incivility include teamwork disparity, poor employee morale, and insufficient management (Todd, 2023). It is essential that promoting a civil culture is imperative to the learning and working environments, in order to ensure safe patient practices. One evidence-based strategy to combat incivility for the nursing leadership team to enforce is to adopt a “strict zero-tolerance policy for incivility,” (Kisner, 2018). This policy will impose and outline the behaviors, attitudes, and actions of incivility along with educational programs that will teach employees about effectively communicating and confronting perpetrators (Kisner, 2018). As the administration of the policy becomes effective, it will allow the victims to speak up for themselves and hold the wrongdoers accountable for their actions, inclusive of repercussions as well. Another strategy to tackle incivility in the nursing profession is for nurse managers and nurse leaders to create a reporting system for incidents that deal with incivility.
