Bos indicus vs. Bos taurus Cattle All cattle can be separated into two groups, zebu (Bos indicus) and European (Bos taurus). They are recognized as two different species, but some think these cattle are descendants of the aurox. The two different groups of cattle Bos indicus and Bos taurus; both have similarities to one another, along with many differences. Bos indicus cattle, are the tropical types of cattle. They are found to be more productive in the subtropical climates. These cattle can sustain and produce in the heat because the sun reflects off their short, shiny hair. This in return keeps them cooler. Within the species group, the Brahman breed was originally brought to the Americas from India. According to the Oklahoma State University animal science department’s “Breeds of Livestock”, the Brahmans, “Often known as Zebu, they have prominent humps forward of the shoulder.” (“Breeds of Livestock”) One characteristic of these breeds is their loose and baggy skin, this helps with cooling off because of increase of surface area on the skin. These cattle originated and came from Europe, therefore they are often referred to as European cattle. This group is known for its maternal instincts, increased production in temperate climates, and their good carcass traits such as percent yield, marbling, and tenderness. In a study done on, Physiological Responses Of Bos Taurus And Bos Indicus Cattle To Prolonged, Continuous Heat And Humidity, it was found that, “Bos taurus cattle experience significant physiological changes during exposure to prolonged and continuous high heat and humidity, with alterations persisting for some days after the heat-stress conditions subside.” (Beatty) This shows how different the Bos taurus is from the Bos indicus
