An analysis of individual Cognitive abilities should be made part of the police service compatibility hiring exam. The importance will be brought in by the need to evaluate each person’s; speed and metal process through reasoning, memory skills, speed of comprehension and problem solving skills. Police officers are always in critical situations and might face unexpected danger, therefore, they need to be able to think and act fast. However, these actions should also be thought through as they would have detrimental effects on the police, the victim or the suspect, and in some cases, all involved. There are many tests found online that claim to show what personality a person has, called, personality tests. These are taken individually thus the person can put in answers that are not necessarily correct. Personality is built up as an individual grows and gets to understand what they like. Over time, thoughts, feelings and behavior start to form as the person gets older and essentially form what is the person’s personality. This individual way of thinking will drive a person to look for friends whom they understand each other, while others will view them as different, and while they might interact, they might not get as close as they would if they shared a personality. Therefore, it is important that the test have a well thought out personality examination so that each individual can be fitted with a compatible partner and in a department where they will be able to work well with their colleagues (Miller et.al 2009). Individual attributes are known as traits which essentially guide the person’s skills, needs, motives of choosing a certain career and personal values. Traits are important for a person to stand out and when selecting what to do with their lives, in terms of careers. Skills can come in naturally, when they are physical or athletic skills but they also need to be honed and trained so that they can serve the individual well. For example, a person can be a great runner but without training and constant practice, they can lose this talent. Therefore, they need to practice constantly and remain healthy enough to be able to run as well as they can. Therefore, for an individual aiming to join the police to get the skills required doing a great job, they need training and assessment of skills that they already have. Once they are trained, they improve through practice and essentially, the skills they already have will help them achieve their work’s purpose.
Traits and skills are important for making decisions under stress. Knowing which each applicant has will help in the prediction of how they would manage under stressful situations. The understanding of these skills is also important because one can then learn where to use what they have, and where to choose a different tactic.
