The Industrial Revolution was very important to the growth of humanity and civilization. During this time, advancements in technology helped make more goods available and less expensive for everyone in society. In addition, these advancements made daily life easier. There were many causes to the Industrial Revolution which occurred due to the availability of coal, improvements in transportation, new consumers in the economy, a growing workforce, and the landscape to sustain its growth, but it also came with a cost.

There was an increase in the number of consumers in the Industrial Revolution (Hudson 2). Britain's large empire was all around the world and gave the country access to more raw materials. These raw material enable factories to produce a variety of goods at a more affordable price. Britain also dominated the world’s trade, especially with the use of the steam engine. The advancements in the steam engine helped ships travel faster, travel longer distances, and carry more cargo for less money (Mullenbach 33). The locomotive also helped London factories to transport goods and people, which also made it possible for the mass production of goods. The population boom at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution helped (Wrigley 35). The increased population in cities helped by providing a large workforce for the factories. In addition, children were a valuable resource. They were considered cheap labor and could better fit around the machinery in the factories. However, the size of the population and workforce began to change (Mullenbach 17). The pollution and poor sanitation created poor living conditions in the cities and towns. The pollution created smoggy and grey skies. The Thames River was full of sewage and waste. The death rate became larger than the birth rate. However, London was still progressing and enlarging its size at a fast rate. The British empire allowed immigrants to come into the country (Manolopoulou 1). Consequently, the workforce was sustained by a smooth intake of people to work in the factories. Even though the workforce was maintained in the factories, it created worse living conditions because of the diversity in the cultures and the continued pollution.
