In today’s school, there are many issues that the students attending may have. One of the issues that are very common in childcare and schools are students that need medication. There are many children that have to take medication daily and during school hours so they can stay in school and partake in class (Dube). Now that students are able to take medication in school, it has benefited many. And, it has allowed students to be in school, rather than be home schooled or in a special needs class (American Academy of Pediatrics). At the start of a school year, there are many children enrolled. Along with the children enrolled comes some with medical issues. The National Association of School nurses believe that, as more chronically ill that are medically stable children enter the school, awareness of factors that can help and support academic success increases (i.e. medications that improve students’ health and help and stabilize their conditions); (NASN). The American Academy of Pediatrics feel that school administrators and health workers should consider whether the administering of over the counter medicine parents suggest is worth the issues that it brings up. They do benefit the student in some ways, there is indicative improvement for the student that allows learning and less disruption in the classroom. But, however, the shortcomings of this idea consist of how hard it is to get physician permission for the temporary medicine, the potential to cause harm simply because the medicine is unprescribed, and it brings up a problem of school safety as well (e.g. students sharing medicine) (American Academy of Pediatrics). Since most parents work and it is rare that they will get leave from their jobs to go tend to their children, which makes it necessary for administration to actually consider allowing parent recommended medications on a short term basis
