Starting with the Babylonians, there is a vague sense of morality on their part. The origins of morality come from the story of what they perceive as creation. Their fear of the Gods translates to their moral behavior and Hammurabi uses this to inflict one of the first set of laws inflicted on mankind. These set of laws are handed down from the great Gods Anu and Bel directly to Hammurabi (or so he says) as though to keep the wicked in place. There are specific rules that single out the inhumane approach to morality. For example, rule 209 saying, “If a man strikes a free-born woman so that she loses her unborn child, he shall pay ten shekels for her loss.” Other rules like this one are just a set of instructions. The promised benefits of following these set of laws will result on zero interference from the Gods, which even Hammurabi seems to accept. A quote from the Code of Hammurabi expresses a direct feeling that he himself, Hammurabi perceives and executes; “Hammurabi, the exalted prince, who feared God”. I feel that when our society, like that of the ancient Babylonians, revolves around action and reaction. The reaction being money and that reflects to much of our moral standards today. If someone is killed by a drunk driver there is an automatic law that gives the family some kind of incentive for the damages done. They sought to better only themselves independently. In the Iliad, the Achilles is view as the man responsible for certain behavior. He was offered either great glory with a short life or no glory with a long life. His decision was for the path of glory and a short life. Again, this man thought only of himself and not a bit of his people. Blaming a certain type of behavior goes to show just how irresponsible these people could be on showcasing true valor.
