Social media has become more prominent in today’s society, and is now viewed as a dependent source of communication for the younger generation including those in post-secondary. Paul A. Tess mentions that “Social media [is] increasingly visible in higher education settings as instructors look to technology to mediate and enhance their instruction as well as promote active learning for students” (60). Integrating social media into the educational system can be beneficial for student and professors. Although all users must be made aware of their limitations, social media should be integrated in post-secondary educational settings because of the benefits they provide for both students and professors. Studies have been done on various students in post-secondary showing that social media was created for communication outside of the educational settings which therefore violates the personal space vs. the learning space. According to Paul. A. Tess, a study done on 190 students who participated in an online survey pertaining to the idea of social media in educational settings came out with the results of

In order to be cautious about the integrating social media into the educational settings, there has to be a reminder that social media was not created for educational purposes. Integrating social media into education requires students and professors to place a tentative attention, and not easily become submissive because of easy availability and connection. Based on previous research done, researchers claim that “Social media have been portrayed as placing the learner at the center of networks of knowledge and expertise that potentially lead to new forms of learning and education despite the fact that these media themselves make no educational promises” (N. Friesen and S. Lowe, 183). Regardless of the fact that social media networks can have its benefits to the education system; that does not guarantee it to be a dependable source for educational purposes. Negative results on the student’s education are caused by multitasking, poor management skills and mostly distraction. Allowing social media into the education system also enables students to access other inconsequent information online apart from class lectures.
