Social Media's Influence On DVHS Students

“Black Lives Matter” and “Gay is Okay” are just a few of the positive labels that students within the DVHS community apply to Blacks and Gays respectively. 37% of students had positive or neutral labels for Blacks while 63% had positive or neutral labels for Gays. This data speaks greatly to the influence of social media on DVHS students. The rising acceptance of gays and the desire for justice for Blacks is greatly represented within the community. Although there are a relatively high percentage of negative labels, for the most part, and in comparison to other parts of the US, the DVHS community is an excellent example of what the country should try and be. It has never been easier for individuals to express their beliefs and the popular beliefs, such as equal rights for gays and black lives matter, have transferred to the DVHS community. Rather than the majority of students thinking about typical stereotypes such as gangsters or thugs, they expressed what social media has taught them to, that Black people matter as well. Furthermore, the high percentage of positive and negative labels suggests that, on average, the DVHS community is very accepting of all kinds of people including Gays. This acceptance most likely stems from two sources. Social Media, and the democratic ideals of California. Once again, the ideas that are spread through social media have a profound affect on students. Moreover, the desire to be politically correct and to be as liberal as possible is clearly reflected within the DVHS community. Rather than having a high percentage of negative labels, as many states in the south would have, DVHS had a relatively low percentage at 67 % for Blacks and only 37 for Gays.
