Furthermore, they usually highlight the bad features of society and juxtapose them to the family’s worth, so the elders give the younger generation coping strategies to function in society the best way they know (385). These three factors have an impact on people’s personalities and their futures because how a person assesses a situation leads to opportunities. Both authors
I enjoyed reading this article because it was very informative about the program of intergenerational playgroup. Prior to this article I knew of IPP, but after reading about a research study and it is statistical evidence about how effective the program can be it is hard not to be interested. This article was a learning experience for me as a professional and as a person because I may not work with older adults right away after I graduate it gives me a good foundation. The population is growing older and older and you will come in contact with older adults sooner or later in life so it is important to have a wide variety of skills in that setting. All of the benefits that this particular program offers for older adults with and without dementia
The principle of development and aging as a continual process of life is the understanding that a person’s behavior cannot be attributed to one time during a person’s life course and that all areas of a person’s life course have an impact (Schmalleger, 2012). One of the central organizing principles of the perspective is the link between human lives and social relationships with friends and family across a person’s life span. These relationships have considerable influence on a person’s life course (Schmalleger,
A multi-generational household is a household that includes at least three adult generations. This is becoming more common as the number has increased within prospective racial and minority groups. Ethnic groups of African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans are reported to have higher rates of multigenerational living opposed to the whites. Current trends are changing as the idea of homes looking similar to that of a nursing home becomes unpleasant. Multigenerational living also has its ups and downs as situations may occur that are stressful.
The baby boomers are the generation born after World War II, from 1946 to 1964. They have been described as hard-working, independent, goal-oriented and competitive. They have also been nicknamed the “me generation”, they value success and see both groups have an anti establishment mentality. This means that they desire and value independent living. Some ways that I can leverage my Boomer knowledge to build intergenerational relations is to build a greater sense of community and reach people across the age gap is to create and become active in intergenerational programs.
Summarize the central argument: Through a series of in-depth interviews Irene Bolemraad gathers enough information to argue that the process in which immigrant families decide to participate in protests (such as the 2006 immigrant right rallies) could be reversed in a way where the younger members of the household are the ones to influence the parents to mobilize. Bolemraad is able to conclude this by a model called bidirectional political socialization that demonstrate through intergenerational communication and interactions that it’s possible to influence family members to become politically engaged. Participation increases when information is gathered from these sources as well as other networks such as schools, churches work places, and
In Rachel Remen’s article Helping vs. Serving she provides her stance on the distinction between helping and serving. Remen feels that, though the two words are often used interchangeably, ‘serving’ is the most appropriate term to use as it implies equality that ‘helping’ does not. While the author acknowledges that both terms refer to the act of assisting others, Remen offers readers a new, more in depth perspective. Essentially, Remen likens helping to having pity on an individual, whereas serving is an act of selflessness. In this selflessness, servers do not focus on what an individual is lacking that they can provide, but rather creating wholeness in humanity.
While creating a media project or program there are certain things you must consider before starting anything. Those are, the ethnic, multi-generational, ethic, and cultural aspects. All of these things are important to analyze in the creation of your project or program for various reasons. If you concern yourself with a specific ethnic group, things you are likely to encounter may be racism, or political matters. Whether you intend to bring up such issues, they are likely to occur no matter what
Power shifts and intergenerational gaps occur in the lives of refuges for many reasons. Due to changes in the family system, the ability for children to adapt at a faster pace, and the parents reluctance to change their ways, many issues will arise if these power shifts and intergenerational gaps can’t be fixed. These very reasons cause children to become “cultural brokers” for their parents in many situations and this brokerage can compromise the level of respect that the teenagers have for their parents (Deng & Marlowe, 2013). Parents may need their children to attend meetings or appointments in order to interpret and translate what is being said. This can take away from the child’s daily life (such as school), and newfound freedom.
I have over heard people talking to elders in a patronizing and condescending tone of voice. I possibly have been guilty of this tone as well, not meaning to appear that way. No one, any age group deserves the condensing tone to be used in conversation. It is disrespectful and humiliating. According to the CPA Model, (The Communication Predicament of Aging Model, "takes the idea of over accommodation and extends it into a broader picture of the causes and consequences of bad intergenerational communication (Hummert, Garstka, Ryan, & Bonnesen, 2004; Ryan, Giles, Bartolucci, & Henwood, 1986)."
Service to me means, giving your all to you school and community without expecting anything in return. At a young age, I participated in many fundraising events with my dance team where we provided a service to others such as annual car washes, waiting tables at various restaurants, and organizing dances and activities for kids. In Junior High I was a key club member and we volunteered for concession stand duties, helped out at elementary basketball tournaments, and acted as line judges or referees at volleyball tournaments. Since my mom is a first grade teacher, I spent many summers setting up and organizing her classroom, and on my days off from school, I provided kids in my mom’s classroom with help in reading or math. As a part of Earth Week at our school, I did various jobs for people in my community.
Theories of late adulthood development are quite diverse in later adulthood than at any other age. They include self-theory, identity theory and stratification theory. The self-theory tries to explain the core self and search to maintain one’s integrity and identity. The older adults tend to integrate and incorporate their various experiences with their vision and mission for their respective community (Berger, 2008). Also, the older people tend to feel that their attitude, personalities and beliefs have remained in a stable state over their lives even as they acknowledge that physical changes have taken place in their bodies.
The Service Learning Community was an amazing experience. It really helped me to grow as a first year student. Music was the most important thing to me in high school and it was challenging leaving it all behind. I decided to focus my service project on the inequality of music education in schools, especially schools in financially struggling areas. The Empire State Youth Orchestra has a program called CHIME which gives underprivileged children free musical training.
Evidence for each of the five areas should include one to two paragraphs of written reflection plus supporting visual evidence in terms of photos, letters, screenshots, etc. 1. Connections to Paper: How was my service learning connected to my passion paper research? My service learning was really closely connected with my service.
