Before getting to content, reading the textbook’s information on new media proved particularly interesting; Kennedy and his co-writers published the textbook in 2010 and so much changed with the internet in five short years. This truly demonstrates the constantly evolving nature of the Internet and its widening, shifting impact. The transition into the 21st century saw a shift in the way Americans conduct business, shop, research and share opinions as American life vaulted off of the streets and into the computer. Internet spread like wildfire into the office, home and school during the 1990s and continuously expands to this very day. Numerically, household internet access increased from 17% in 1997 to 70% in 2007. According the a report for the Census Bureau, this number only increased to 74.4% in 2013, but 73.4% of these connections are high-speed, meaning people utilize their nifty world-shrinker at lightning speeds. …show more content…

However, the Internet explosion -- specifically the “.com” explosion in the 1990s -- catalyzed the economic boom in the 1990s. Companies like Microsoft increased communications; the advent of internet shopping created a “21st century mall, library and shopping center; social networking geared for work purposes enable countries to be more spread out, but feel closer than ever.
