My partner and I stand in strong affirmation of the statement Resolved: On balance, the benefits of the Internet of Things outweigh the harms of decreased personal privacy.

In order to better understand the resolution as well as delineate parameters for this debate, we provide the following observations:

Internet Of Things: The interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.

In this debate we will explain why we affirm by expressing our ideas in Contention 1: Economy, Contention 2: Safety and Contention 3: Internet Privacy Laws.

New York Daily News says that there are 1.23 billion facebook accounts that are active daily. Stu sjouwerman says that on average 600,000 facebook accounts everyday are used by known hackers to obtain personal information. Criminals can easily use social media or other web sites like Whitepages to find lots of personal information. Criminals could use this information to target you for many purposes; many of which could endanger you. Most criminals use this information for some form of stalking. 6.6 Million people are stalked per year and 2 out of 3 people are stalked more than once. (1 out of 5 stalkers use or threaten with the use of a weapon. 78% of stalkers use multiple ways of stalking so no one can be safe.) This could put your personal safety at risk because of the Internet of Things. This could significantly lower your quality of life in many ways. 1 out of 7 people that are stalked move because of stalkers. The people that don’t move could develop anxiety, insomnia, social dysfunction and many other symptoms. Also this could lead to severe depression which could cause suicides. Another big cause of suicide is cyber bullying via the Internet of Things. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in young people with 4,400 victims a year. 20% of cyber bully victims think about suicide. The Internet of Things is the reason most of this suicide is occurring. (1 out of 3 teens and 1 out of 6 children have reported being victims of cyberbullying over this past year. Only 20% of cyber bullying is reported to authorities.) This proves that the the low privacy of the Internet of Things is bad for you and your
