The execution of contributing factors such as distorted communication, degrading unexpressed feelings, and deceitful misconception conveys how it can have drastic affects, not only on the characters themselves, but others around them in a negative way that can alter the bond or relationships such as the story “Interpreter Maladies” through the Das family and Mr.Kapasi. In this story Lahiri tries to illustrate the importance of relationships and these factors can make or break them and lead on to adverse problems like the lack of communication between Mr. Kapasi and his wife, or the lack of enjoyment in Mrs. Das marriage which led her to adultery. A Lahiri makes the claim that a relationship is only as strong as the effort that is put into them, if it fails, it can lead to an alarming amount of backlash that one cannot predict.

Mrs. Das and Mr. Kapasi coming together as a result of their similar feelings of their failed marriages is an example of the affect of meager communication in their relationships. The story uses the quote “ They wept together, for the things they now know”. Helps reveal how lack of conversation has destroyed their liaisons with their spouses and left with expressions of misery and anguish. Das marriage left her unsatisfied and led her to resort to cheating. She thought that having an affair will appease her but it only caused her to experience languish unexpressed feelings of guilt and regret because she know its wrong. She makes this claim to Mr. Kapasi in which he understands and replies to her “Is it really pain you feel, Mrs. Das, or is it guilt”. The way she felt after she committed the sin caused her to distance herself from her husband and her kids and become self-centered.
