Intersectionality is a very important part of identity. It changes the way people see and interact with each other and the bias people have, whether they are aware of it or not. Intersectionality is using the combination of layers of identity such as race, gender, sexuality, or ability, and looking at them together rather than individual pieces.
People are diverse. There are people in this world that are different races, genders, abilities, and sexual orientations. Identity is often formed by a combination of these pieces. For example, I am an able-bodied, heterosexual, white female. A study from PLOS decided to examine ow multiple social factors come together to influence outcomes. They knew that it was necessary to stop looking at one factor to find a single factor that causes the issue of low academic success or low hopes for the future children in school. They looked at race, socioeconomic status, and gender and how these factors influenced children in school, both individually and together. The low income classes had different gender and race gaps than wealthier classes. Students that were from lower income classes had less gaps in academic achievement between race and gender. The students that were from wealthier classes had more gaps between students of different races and genders. It is interesting to see that the combination of different factors changes the result of the study. If the study were to focus only on race, the results would be very different. The students have different levels of achievements inside and outside the classroom because of race, gender, and socioeconomic factors combined. It is not just one factor or another that changes the way students perform. A lot of this is to do with how the students are taught to think about themselves in these settings. The wealth factor completely changes how students perform combined with race and gender, and we would not know about that if we didn't study how all of the different pieces fit. Looking at one factor as the sole cause for something leaves out the important parts that may be the real
