Stuttering is when there are abnormal stops, repetitions, and prolonged sounds and syllables during speech. Stuttering is classified as a fluency disorder. When someone is stuttering, they may repeat words or proceed with words like “uh” or “um”. Student who stutter may also have unusual facial expressions and body movements when speaking. Stuttering is a problem because it can impede on communication, and stuttering can also affect a student’s self-esteem. Students who stutter often times face issues with using the telephone, speaking in front of large groups. They have their own personal “participation restrictions” because they do not want to be made fun of. Stuttering can be caused by one of the following: genetics, child development, neurophysiology, and family dynamics. One intervention strategy for stuttering would be to provide a good speech model. To provide a good speech environment the teacher should set up conversational rules. Interruptions can cause stuttering, so the teacher should ensure that no one interrupts while that student is talking and that everyone has a chance to speak. Good listening will also help to create a good speech environment. A teacher should listen attentively and react appropriately, instead of correcting the child’s speech because a teacher wouldn’t want to lower that child’s self-esteem by correcting their speech. Another way to create a good speaking environment is to allow the student to stop all other tasks while speaking, so that they can focus on what they’re saying. Another way to create a good speaking environment is to warn students about upcoming events. Students are more likely to stutter if they’re extremely excited about an event, so the teacher would want to make sure that the student is in the know to help intervene the
