Hunter Fitzgerald, Ivan Smith Furniture Interview, Final Report After an interview with Scottie Parker, the sales manager of Ivan Smith Furniture of Winnfield, I have learned much about sales practices that are used by companies such as Ivan Smith Furniture to gain the most customers and maximize profit. In the interview I first learned a little about Ivan Smith Furniture. Ivan Smith Furniture currently is spread across three states, Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana with sixty-two total stores and around six hundred total employees. Also, there are currently six employees working inside the Winnfield store two of which are salespeople. Ivan Smith Furniture uses a base salary-plus commission form of compensation for their sales force (Hunt et al., 2021, p. 130). This not only incentivizing the sales team to make more sales with the high commission rate, but also assuring the sales team that know matter the circumstances, they will still make a base salary and even have good insurance. Scottie and the sales team at Ivan Smith Furniture want to build good relationships with their customers so that they will come back. Customer relationships are especially important for business such as Ivan Smith Furniture because a lot of their products are likely to not last forever. In the interview Scottie told me, “A pillow gets wore out and everyone needs a new mattress from time to time” (personal communication, February 7, 2023). In any business, a company wants customers to have a good experience when they buy from the company so they will come back. Also, with word of mouth being Ivan Smith Furniture’s most effective way of advertisement, ensuring that the customer had a good experience with the company is essential because Ivan Smith Furniture needs customers to go out and spread the word.
