Everytime you unlock your cell phone to speak with a family member living in a different state you are using technology to assist your communication. The hardest part about keeping family members up to date about your life is finding strong internet connection, and that is not even hard. Today you can easily upload a selfie at the zoo onto Snapchat in order to inform your friends of your fun trip.
But before the invention of social media, such as Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook keeping friends and family members up to date about your life was much more difficult before the invention of social media. Once you had to make a phone call or send a letter or postcard. And before the invention of the car your trip may not have been possible, because the trip was simply too far.
Automobiles, telephones, and social media platforms may have all been invented a good time apart and to perform different tasks. But they were all invented with the same intention; to make the world a bit smaller for the user.

In his article Is Google Making Us Stupid?, he explains how the use of the internet as a source of information has changed the way humans are taking in information, both literally and mentally, by making the access to this information more “immediate and efficient,” while effecting the way the brain reads and processes information. Carr goes as far as suggesting that this switch to immediate stimuli of entertainment and information from technology has created a whole new style of reading, and in turn created a new style of processing information that stifles the ability to focus and memorize. He says if users are learning to read differently- meaning reading at a certain rate, distincting important information from unimportant, processing information they have read into our memory, and so on- the user are also learning to think
