Good vs. Evil Are humans evil and do good to make up for their evilness or are they good and just make bad judgment calls? It is obvious through reading “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, and “The Black Cat’’ by Edgar Allen Poe that people are really good but make bad judgment calls. The first example of this is in “Lather and Nothing Else”.
What is morally right, wrong, or in between relies on the individual making the judgment. Concepts of “good” and “bad” are not the same universally. In the stories “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People”, author Flannery O’Connor uses goodness as a theme and utilizes badness to establish the idea of goodness. In most cases, this is not so straightforward. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” has an elusive definition of what a “good man” is.
Good and bad, two small words that have so much meaning. What makes people react the way they do? Are people born to be good or bad, or do they have any control over what they will become? In Man’s Nature Is Good and Man’s Nature Is Evil, Mencius and Hsun Tzu argue about the true meaning of human nature. Mencius believed that humans are inherently good and Hsun Tzu believed that humans are naturally evil. Is it possible humans can be both good and evil? When it comes to whether human nature is good or evil, most people will choose one or the other.
Good and evil are two terms that have been around since eternity. The stereotypical definition of good and evil are, ‘Good’ means a lack of self centeredness. It means the ability to empathies with others, to feel compassion for them, and if needs to put their needs before your own. It means being able to see beyond the superficial boundaries of race, gender or nationality and connect to a common human essence beneath them. ‘Evil’ people are who lack the skill to empathies with others.
Are people really evil? Or is it their actions to blame? I believe that both a person and their actions can be evil. For we are humans that can be corrupted and become jealous over things, thus tainting our actions. But i also strongly believe that our actions can easily tinge our self, causing us to change into something evil, even if it 's just for a period of time.
I'd say I lean heavily towards the positive view when it comes to human nature. I believe humans are inherently good when given the right circumstances. I cannot believe that anyone is inherently evil, and usually when people say someone was born evil, I believe it means they just don't understand mental health. Some of the most heinous murders ever committed were due to mental health issues, such as anti- social personality disorder, (I.E. Jeffery Dahmer) and other disorders. And when there are no disorders present there is usually an environmental factor such as abuse, neglect, and emotional trauma, etc...
Is Man Inherently Good or Evil? How people believe the nature of humans is a very personal belief. That belief is shaped by how they grew up , and by their life experiences. What people believe has a large impact on the way they live their lives. Like John Locke, I agreed that people are inherently good. Our actions in crisis moments define us the most.

Good benefits almost everyone and causes little harm - from a certain point of view. Evil is the opposite. Whatever is painful, miserable, and threatening to others is pretty evil.
Evil is a simple word that we learn at a young age and that we understand is bad. However, our youth and innocence prevents us from knowing the weight the word holds. As our understanding of evil develops, we begin to see evil all around us. Although we hold common societal definitions of evil, each person is bound to view evil slightly different from others. Someone might consider alcoholism evil, while others consider it normal: someone might believe racism is evil, while others believe it is natural.

Since an uncivilized person is not groomed to know what is immoral, he naturally commits evil without any second thoughts. This supports the claim that humans are inherently evil. People are generally evil due to the desire to benefit themselves.
As people often talk about good and evil as if there is objective value. We also insist and live in a culture where you can do good or bad and that there is a certain set of standards you could conform to to be considered good. For example, we call giving to the poor good and disobeying a cop bad, but is this true and exact? We, as humans, are, by nature, animals who are trying to survive in this world at the core, in the manner of self-preservation. When you consider that everyone truly looks out for their own self first, one quickly comes to the realization that there is no good nor evil; all there is is a desire for self-preservation based on the needs of an animal, war to obtain that status, and a hollow illusion of peace to try and maintain self-preservation
