Black, Colored, Negroes, Niggers… All names that had been given to describe “darker” skinned toned individuals whom only wanted the pleasure of being free in a land full of opportunity. Imagine being taken from what you know as home to be turned into someone’s property and considered no more as free; to be considered no more as human but as chattel. The question is, who? Who in the hell would want to be a slave? “The Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turners Fierce Rebellion” by Stephen Oates happened to be one the most vivid books in which provided its audience with details that placed the reader in the shoes of the characters whom suffered for years because of a law that imprisoned human beings because of the complexion of their skin, filling their heads
John Brown killed many innocent people who did not own slaves. According to document E, on November 20th, 1859, Mahala Doyle expressed her anger towards John Brown. John Brown deliberately shot two of her sons and her husband because they were pro-slavery, even though they did not own slaves and weren’t ever going to own them. This shows that John Brown is a villain because he killed almost a whole family that did not own slaves, all because they were pro-slavery.

Nathaniel “Nat” Turner was born a slave on October 2, 1800 on a plantation. Nat became a preacher who said that he had been chosen by God to lead the slaves away from Bondage. On August 21, 1831 he had lead a violent insurrection. Nat hid for several weeks but was finally found and hung. The incident ended the Emancipation movement in that region and had lead to much harder laws against slaves.
Nat Turners Rebellion became monumental for many people of color, he was idolized and respected for his courageous actions. The rebellion created fear that spread through the South, even those in favor for abolishment now wanted stricter laws for slaves. Turner was “recorded on the list of dishonor” for the organization he had lead (“An Address To The Slave Of The united Slaves”). There had been an interview by Thomas R. Gray, defending and slightly sympathizing with Turners actions, many rejected the validation of the interview and felt as if he just wanted “to trick, confuse, and overwhelm the slave’s minds.” (“The Southampton Tragedy”).

Nat Turner’s rebellion turned out to be the bloodiest slave revolt in Southern history, one that was to have a profound and irrevocable impact on the destinies of Southern whites and blacks alike. Nat Turner was an intelligent man, that had the opportunity to study white children’s schoolbooks, and got to experiment in making gunpowder. Nat was also a very religious man, and often served as a preacher to black churches in the area. Many of the people referred to him as being a “prophet.” People saw him as a prophet because he claimed that he was able to speak to the Holy Spirit.
Looking at what he has fought for, it’s no doubt that he fought for a noble cause which is the freedom of slavery. John Brown shouldn’t be known as hero or terrorists because of want he has done applies to both sides. John Brown shouldn’t be known as a terrorist or a national hero because of his violent attack and raids. After, September 11, 2001 John Brown has been called a terrorist which has caused controversy about Brown’s legacy and reputation. Furthermore, in the article, The 9/11 of 1859 says, “He led 21 men all but two in their 20s, and many of them radicalized by guerilla fighting in Bleeding Kansas, the abolitionists’ Afghanistan”(Horowitz).
Slavery would have never been put to an end if it wasn't for the countless amounts of revolutions and protest by former slaves. Although many were not successful, they still sparked hope for enslaved Americans at the time. One of these rebellions being the Stono Rebellion, which was one of the largest, deadliest and best organized uprisings of enslaved Africans during the North American colonial era. This rebellion began on September 19, 1793 in Charleston and was led by 20 black slaves. The main goal for this revolt was to get to freedom, by Spanish Refuge in Florida.
