How to Ruin Teens Lives One/fourth of teens are on their phones constantly, like they never get off. What do you think about that. This statistic shows that teens are losing friendships because they are behind a screen to much. Some effects of being on social media all the time is you don’t build relationships and your not as active. We should put a stop to this.
In Melissa Healy’s article, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” Healy argues that kids who is submerged in their social media may not be such a bad thing. Melissa supports this argument by explaining the new study that states 13 and 14 year olds use the same style of conversation that they have with online friendships and offline friendships. She also explains how the associate director of the Children’s Digital Media Center in Los Angeles, Subrahmanyam finds out children and young adults constructively use the internet for work.
Over the course of this unit, we have read several articles on social media. According to Hilary Stout, she believes social media is harming kids today. I agree with her because is distracting kids from doing their work. Social media is also giving kids easier ways to bully and harass other kids. Stout states that kids are less interested in face to face communication and would rather talk online.
In the article, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea,” the author, Melissa Healy, claims that social media is rather beneficial than harmful to teenagers. According to researches that were included in the article, using social media is an activity that helps teenagers in many ways, and parents should worry about their kids using it. Youngsters who use social media are the healthiest psychologically and may be more well-adjusted as well. Also, using social media assists children in their development of emotional bonds, their own identities, and social skills. Additionally, the effect of social media is dependent on the user, so whether social media is a good or bad thing depends on how each children use it.
Katie Hurley, the author of the article “Social Media and Teens:”, provides information on the widespread debate of whether or not social media helps or hurts teenagers. Assuming the audience is parents that have a teenage girl or boy, Hurley writes this article by giving information, but also advice for parents too. The audience would most likely benefit if they are parents of teenagers. Hurley states that the impact social media has on teens’ mental health is still unknown due to media constantly changing, and the lack of long-term studies. The contents of the article include mentions of multiple studies and results from different universities.
When we come home from school or work and immediately hop on the Internet, our brains don’t get the chance to de-stress and unwind from the day’s activities. Since there is an increase of Internet and technology use, rudeness and incivility on social media sites has also increased. Teens are always looking to fit in and be happy, but they don’t seek out opportunities to interact with one another because they are so worried and caught up with social media and trying to fit in. Dr. Wick also confirms the emotional effect that social media has, “kids are often left imagining the worst about themselves” (17). If teenagers today are put in a situation where they are asked to express themselves or what their opinion is over a topic, they feel uncomfortable and awkward because they have grown accustomed to only expressing those types of emotions through a screen and not in person. Causing them to miss out on the real world, they “are learning to do most of their communication while looking at a screen, not another person” (2).

Research from the Pew Research Center in the article “Antisocial Networking” indicated that , “… half of American teenagers – defined in the study as ages 12 through 17 – send 50 or more text messages a day and that one third send more than 100 a day.” Although this statistic seems to demonstrate teens being productive online, the persistent usage of social media is making kids over-obsessed with social media. The obsession of social media is manipulating kids into believing that it is a necessity to devote more time socializing through technology, thus reducing their general health.

However, Suren Ramasubbu in "Influence of Social Media on Teenagers" argues that social media has many terrible effects on children. Though critics focus on the negative, social media can provide many beneficial effects on children.

Many negative effects could happen to us when using social media, but we are still using it and it’s not looking good. Using social media is shown lead to social isolation, antisocial behaviors, and it discourages contact and connections with others. Children that use social media would grow up to adulthood with anxiety, aggression, antisocial behaviors, and depression (Wright). From those behaviors, they could lead to trouble both in the real world and in the digital world as well.
Some have stress, and it makes them feel horrible, “Ultimately…forming identities separate from their parents.” However, when some teens get over stressed and seem too attached to their phones, parents should check their phones to see whether something in their accounts is causing them to detach from them and others. If social media is destroying communication, electronics should be put away, and parents should watch what their children are doing. “In an ironic twist, social media has the possibility to make us less social; surrogates for the real thing.”
Some people say that social media is dangerous for kids because it changes their behaviors and more importantly it affects their learning for school. It is dangerous because, they never know who they are chatting with online. Social media changes children 's behaviors because they do unhealthy things that are intended for people over 18 years of age. It also affects their education in a bad way by using abbreviations or slang that threatens their skills in writing. However, others say that social media is beneficial for kids because researchers see them expressing themselves on it.
