We read several articles about social media. According to Hilary Stout, she believes social media is harming kids today. I disagree with her claim because I believe social media is not the only thing kids are on or using. We still interact with our friends offline and even more so now that we can communicate to each other and plan things through social media. I’m getting my information from the article “ Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” and my personal opinions/experiences.
The opinion article, “It Was a Mistake to Let Kids Onto Social Media Sites. Here’s What to do Now” by Yuval Levin, states that parents should not let their children on social media because of the potential harm it exposes kids and teens to. Levin begins by explaining how the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act does not allow anyone under 13 to have a social media account. Still, it’s easy to lie about age online which allows younger children to use the apps. He then goes on to note the harmful effects of social media, for example, bullying and harassment.
This article is about social media and kids using communication devices. The author Hilary Stout makes the argument that kids using social media are not going to be well suited for face to face conversations. She also claims that the kids miss out on experiences that will help them with their communication skills. Stout’s first argument is that kids using social media and texting are not going to have good face to face communication.
What can be seen in source 1 is a FaceBook status made by an adolescent, commenting on the actions of a 12 year old. “Saw sum litle 12year old reading in the|libary today,, … lol dum b*tch, why read when theres partyss to go to?” This status displays the expectations adolescents have today, and the discrimination made against other adolescents when they do not comply to such expectations. While still referring to source 1; another negative impact of social media is cyberbullying. Many adolescents cyberbully because many forms of social media provide anonymity, lack of consequences and even social pressure.
Some people may say that social media has more positives than negatives, and others may say the opposite. In this essay I will be talking about why I believe social media has a major negative effect on people. Social media is actively used by many people around the world, especially teens. Social media can be used to share your ideas with others, gain information, and as a source of entertainment. But, it can also have negative effects, leading to insecurities, bullying, threats, and even harm.
How do you think your world would be without social media? If you didn’t know there are real dangers when students use social media. Another reason is social media can harm your reputation. Some people are mistaken about social media because it can help you by putting you in social groups, you can even make friends on social media. But teens should not use social media because of dangers, harm to reputation, and mental illnesses.
She also supported her claim by saying, being with my friends allowed me to learn what a strong relationship is. I agree with this because I know someone who is more comfortable to talk online rather than in person. Stouts second claim is, exchanges these days with friends are more superficial and more public. She supported her claim

Young children should cut down on their social media because bullying has become a huge factor in using too much social media, kids do not socialize as much, and too much social media affects kids learning abilities. Many kids that are between the age 10 - 12 are just not learning as much because they are always on their phone or they are just texting instead of doing their math homework or any homework they were assigned. Also, many kids that are using many social media are not paying attention in class because they were up the whole night texting their friends or they were just posting things and that can lead to bullying. Also, many of the children do not socialize as much in person but when they go on to their phone they can text for
Social media is not a good thing, and I do not support the use of it, because it is a cause of distractions, it disconnects people from the real world, and because people think they can multitask when they can not. It causes people to get distracted. When is comes to students doing their homework it was " demonstrated that some students, even on their best behavior, can't concentrate on homework for more than two minutes without distracting themselves by using social media" (article 1). This proves that not a single student can avoid distractions for any amount of time. When " people who are interrupted by technology score 20 percent lower on standard cognition test" (article 1).
Social media has a lot of certain effects on us today. It is a part of a variety of people's daily lives yet has negatives that come with using it. With social media being such a big influence in our lives it does include discrimination and criticism. There are 2.47 billion social media users today and it continues to grow rapidly, it is also said that 88% of teenagers have had problems with social media and the way it has made them feel towards themselves and others. Social media affects your life immensely, with comparison, bullying, and self-image.
Some people say that social media is dangerous for kids because it changes their behaviors and more importantly it affects their learning for school. It is dangerous because, they never know who they are chatting with online. Social media changes children 's behaviors because they do unhealthy things that are intended for people over 18 years of age. It also affects their education in a bad way by using abbreviations or slang that threatens their skills in writing. However, others say that social media is beneficial for kids because researchers see them expressing themselves on it.
Living in the modern era makes social media become part of our life. Basically, social media are used for communication and social interaction. Based on the Merriam-Webster, social media are forms of electronic communication (as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos). There are lots of social media that people use nowadays such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Path, and others. Most of people probably have two or more social media’s accounts.
Social media sites including Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are at their peak when influencing young adults. Ongoing issues, cyberbullying, threats, and hate crimes are being presented through these social media sites and this is one of the multitude of reasons why parents should limit the use of technology for their teenagers. I agree that parents should limit the use of social media for their teenage child, or for any age child, because ongoing use causes lack of exercise, impaired social skills, and harm for threat and violence. Parents should restrict the use of social media sites for their children because it causes a decrease in physical activity. New research is showing a rapid decline in physical activity all around the globe.
