Social media is destroying real communication between people because they would rather tweet on Twitter, post pictures on Snap Chat, and text each other on the cell phones, rather than speak face to face. When avoiding this contact they distance themselves from people because they do not see the facial expressions, or the body language of the others. They only see the printed words, pictures, and emojis. In the first article, the teenager was depressed and crying in her dorm room. However, she was telling everyone on social media that she was ok, but in reality, she was not. Just because someone says he/she is ok, does not mean they are. As Susan Tardanico notes, “In the days that followed…she had been hiding in her dorm …crying and showing signs of depression…the reality different from the one that she conveyed in the text.” The girl was texting that she was fine, but in the end, she was depressed. In addition, according to the article, “Studies show that only 70 % of communication is based on the written or verbal word.
