Is The Patriot Movie Historically Accurate

Hollywood often portrays historical events in movies, making them dramatic and sometimes, complete lies. The movie, The Patriot, is a good example of several dramatized historical events. The Patriot is a movie based on events that happened during the Revolutionary War. Although the movie made up new fictional characters and added in scenes, it still depicts somewhat real history but not really. I believe that the movie, The Patriot, is not at all accurate because Benjamin Martin is not a real person, the Continental Army did not retreat to the designated spot behind the rise and Colonel Tarleton (Tavington) did not die in battle. First, Benjamin Martin is not a real person. He never fought in the Revolutionary War. According to The Patriot Film Fact or Fiction: People, “Benjamin Martin is based on a combination of real historical figures”. This proves that Benjamin Martin never actually existed in the way that the movie depicted. In the article it says that he was based off of Andrew Pickens, Thomas Sumter, Daniel Morgan, Elijah Clarke, and Francis Marion. The Continental Army just simply charged after the militia did a fake retreat. In the article The Patriot Film Fact or Fiction: Battles it says, “In the movie the Continental regulars and Colonel Burwell were waiting in reserve behind the rise, rather than retreating to that position during battle as really happened. After seeing the militia retreating, the British had broken discipline in anticipation of a rout, but when they came over the rise, they found themselves double-flanked. This all is pretty close to what happens in the movie”. This proves that The Patriot did not use the actual events completely correct such as the tactics used by the real Continental
