Before the emergence of iTunes downloading music on the internet was illegal. Record labels were filing lawsuits against companies like Napster who offered these services. Steve Jobs saw the need the public had during the digital revolution and proposed the iTunes model to Record Labels. The iTunes music store opened in the April of 2003 to rousing acclaim from the public. Through the next 8 years, the iTunes store sold 10 billion tracks which saw it become the world’s leading music retailer. Steve Jobs was the brain behind iTunes and his genius is what enabled iTunes to become what it is today.
