In 1994 Peter Ackroyd, a seasoned novelist and Englishmen, wrote the hauntingly realistic mystery crime novel The Trial of Elizabeth Cree. Originally published as Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem in England, the book is a historically based work of fiction that includes several very real characters and places. Ackroyd used the names of: Dan Leno, dubbed at the time the “funniest man on earth,” Karl Marx, and George Gissing. He did take some liberties with these characters by changing ages and life events. One of the most haunting parts of the story is its resemblance to Jack the Ripper and the Whitechapel murders in 1888. Jack the Ripper is one of the most well-known serial killers across the world. Both were released rather recently, within the past month. The world premiere of the Opera was on September 14, 2017. The music was composed by 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner Kevin Puts and the Librettist is Mark Campbell. Kevin Puts won the Pulitzer Prize for his debut opera, Silent Night. He has been hailed as one of “the most important composers of his generation” (Official website…). Puts’s works include four symphonies, two operas, and several concertos performed and recorded by some of the most renowned and leading orchestras, ensembles, and soloists in the world. Needless to say, Kevin Puts is a fantastic and well-known composer. Mark Campbell has written a multitude of librettos over his career. Many of which are critically acclaimed, including the 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner Silent Night. He has won over ten awards and recognitions for his work as both a librettist and lyricist. Not only are the librettist and composer famous, so are the director and main cast. The Director David Schweizer has been nominated for a prestigious award and has a lengthy list of projects that he has directed. The woman playing Elizabeth Cree in this opera, Daniela Mack a brilliant Mezzo-Soprano, is a very famous singer. Only a few scenes included the whole orchestra playing at once, most scenes only had a few instruments to punctuate or accent the scene. If the music is too loud or complex it can drown out or distract from the performance, completely ruining the opera. Kevin Puts does well in composing music that compliments and does not outshine the vocals. Some of the instruments include: the violin, cello, triangle, flute, a few brass instruments, piano, and xylophone. The flute was used extensively in this opera, it was used for all kinds of scenes mainly to punctuate important parts. Certain characters had their own music; John Cree had eerie music in every scene he appeared in. When Elizabeth confessed to murdering all those people and setting her husband up to look like the killer, the whole orchestra played together to make the moment feel very dramatic.
