One of the earlies records of the first usage of Criminal Profiling was in the late 1880s in Whitechapel London. A surgeon named Thomas Bond and another Physician named George Phillips analyzed crime scenes to make predictions about the infamous Jack the Ripper’s. Jack the Ripper was a serial murderer who raped and abused five women before murdering them. There was very little information about this man and these two physicians were determined to figure out Jack the Ripper’s personality. One of the earliest records in the United States was in 1956 after George Metesky evaded the New York City police for 16 years. In a hostage taking scenario, law enforcement officers usually have little contact with the offender. Usually hostage takers do not want to be seen and only speak to law enforcement officers verbally. In situations like this, law enforcement officers need to obtain as much information as possible about the offender to figure out what kind of person they are dealing with. If possible, friends and family of the offender are contacted to give any additional information about the offender. If law enforcement officers are not able to accurately figure out what kind of person the offender is or figure out what course of action the offender may take, the hostages lives could be in danger. Rapists are also vulnerable to criminal profiling. Obviously, this applies if the rapist is unknown, if so, then law enforcement officials ask the victim some questions. In this scenario, law enforcement officials need to be careful when asking questions to the victim since the victim will be sensitive at this time. These questions should help the law enforcement officials figure out what type of person committed this violent act, as well as attempting to figure out their personality or behavioral characteristics.
