James Chadwick Research Paper

588 Words3 Pages

James Chadwick was a famous scientist in the world of chemistry. His main discovery is when he discovered neutrons. This discovery contributed majorly to the science of chemistry. He found that neutrons are particles that carry not a positive or a negative electronic charge. He had founded the beginning of nuclear fusion, and the atomic bomb by bombarding elements with neutrons. This began in 1932 as he experimented with beryllium. Bombardment of alpha particles into beryllium released an unknown radiation that he saw ejected protons form the nuclei of other elements. He became Fellow of Gonville and Caius College in 1921. In 1927 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society, also in 1923 he became the assistant director of research in the …show more content…

Chadwick repeated these experiments but with a different goal from them, to find a neutral particle. He was successful he determined that there was another particle and it had a mass of around 0.1 percent more than protons. This was incredible the world at the time, he published it in his paper called “Possible Existence of Neutron”. Soon after scientist all over accepted his findings. Later his findings let to Werner Heisenberg showing that proton-electron pairing is not possible. This showed that it had its own unique particle. With his experiment of launching neutrons into nuclei, physicists soon realized that neutrons are ideal for launching particles into nuclei, causing extreme amounts of energy to be realized. Soon neutrons bombardment was used on the nucleus of a uranium atom leading up to the Atom bomb. In a committee at the University of Liverpool he assessed the feasibility of the atom bomb. He was quoted saying “that a nuclear bomb was not only possible, it was inevitable” and “I had then to take sleeping pills, it was the only remedy”. So then the MAUD Committee helped in giving an impetus to the American atom bomb program. He contributed greatly to the Manhattan Project. His
