The New England colonies settled because they wanted to have religious freedom which was the most important factor to the colonists. The people that made up these colonies just wanted a place to have freedom to worship. However, The New England colonies developed different from the colonies in the Chesapeake. Jamestown and New England had different economies, government and demographic make-up of the population. It was important for the New England colonies to have religious freedom.
In 1607, the attraction to the East Coast started off with the first permanent English settlement in North America, Jamestown. After Jamestown was founded no other colonies were made until 1620 with the Plymouth colony in Massachusetts. Not long after the founding of the first two colonies, eleven other colonies were created. Even with this many colonies I believe the first two colonies to be the most influential and insightful because they set the example for all of the other colonies. Because I believe these two colonies to be the most impactful I will start with history and then break down and compare different aspects including location, motivations, early years, religious differences, native relations, and economic standpoints.
In the early 1500s, European countries began attempts to expand into the new world, but many of the early settlements failed. The first two colonies to have been successfully established were from England; they were Jamestown, the first inaugurated colony, and Plymouth, the second colony founded by Pilgrims who were searching for religious freedom. There were many ways in which the settlements differed, but the also shared various commonalities that (may have) led to their colonial successes. The settlers of Jamestown and Plymouth were different, having their own ways and ideas as to how they would, together, grow and thrive.
In 1607, the first colonists arrived in the new world,today, known to us as America. This colony was the Jamestown colony. Eventually more colonists came and created bigger colonies like the massachusetts colony In 1774, upset by the boston tea party and other blatant acts british Parliament passed a law intended to punish the people of massachusetts for their resistance. This act was called the Coercive act.
The colony of Jamestown was at a population of 504 after an arrival of a fleet of 9 ships carrying women, men, children and much needed food and supplies. Captain John Smith took hold of the chaotic government and put in place rigid policies of discipline and agricultural cultivation. In 1608 a gunpowder accident wounding Smith, his rivals used this opportunity to force him to return to England and name George Percy as his successor as president of the council. The day before John Smith’s departure, Captain Davis arrived with 16 other men adding to the population of Jamestown. However, a few weeks later, president Percy sent Captain Ratcliffe to build a fort for fishing and trade at Point Comfort.
North America began colonization in 1607 in the town of Jamestown, Virginia. The Virginia Colony was founded by John Smith, John Rolfe and the London Company at Jamestown. Massachusetts was the third colony to be established in Colonial America. The Massachusetts Colony was founded by John Winthrop and other Puritans, at Massachusetts Bay. Massachusetts and Virginia were the early colonies out of thirteen during the colonial era of the forming of the United States.
Jamestown, Virginia is located in the Chesapeake Bay region in Virginia and is directly adjacent to the James River. It was originally an English settlement. On May 13th, 1607, it was first settled and was named Jamestown after King James I and it became the first permanent English settlement in Virginia as the soil is conducive to farming tobacco especially. Nowadays, Jamestown is primarily a recreational area with a historic center that attracts tourists year
Colonial History There are many different theories about why the colonies were founded. All 13 colonies were divided into 3 categories: New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, and Southern Colonies. The New England colonies had 4 colonies; Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
In Jamestown, the colonists formed a general assembly, the House of Burgesses, the first legislative assembly. It consisted of elected or appointed official of a municipality representing eleven plantations. Also, the Massachusetts Bay colony established a representative government. The colony was initially run by a General Court. After the number of settlers increased, the settlers elected two representatives from each district to the General Court.
“We the people of the United States…” these were the first words written by colonists in the year 1787. On September 17th leaders from the 13 colonies, including George Washington, got together and produced the United States Constitution, it included basic rights and laws for the nation. May 4th, 1607, Jamestown is one of the first colonies founded in the United States. It was located in today’s Virginia and is famous for its struggles to keep its people alive for the first couple years. With about 80% of the population dead from starvation and disease, it is believed that they resorted to cannibalism.
Founding of North American British Colonies The History of North American Colonies began with the Native Americans rather then with Christopher Columbus, even though current History says America was discovered by Columbus. He named it the New World. The Europeans grouped the Native Americans as "one people" even though they did not see themselves as such. That is because they were filled with a linguistic diverse group of individuals.
Northern colonies started as just state all bunched into one. They are now there own separate states now. The northern colonies are now the states of Plymouth,Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and finally New Hampshire. Plymouth Colony: Plymouth colony was an English colonial venture in North America from the years of 1620 to 1691. The first settlement of the Plymouth Colony was at New Plymouth, a location previously surveyed and named by Captain John Smith.
The Jamestown colony came to establish English power in the New World and to explore the New World and also to plunder the Portuguese ships passing with slaves and other important cargo. The Plymouth colony, which consisted of all Puritans, came because King Charles I was persecuting the Puritans in England. In other words, the Puritans wanted religious freedom, so their only option was to come to the New World to avoid death. Also, Jamestown colony was there to go back and forth from England and stay under the reign of the King. The Plymouth colony came to stay and escape the reign of King Charles
But the majority of the young white males who came to Jamestown were poor, uneducated, and unskilled. They had no families and no means of supporting themselves, which meant that they caused a potential problem to the political and economic challenge for stability. Since these men had no skills, they would become indentured servants, trading their labor for free passage to the colonies. Elite landowners used this unfree labor to their advantage by growing cash crops like tobacco and exporting their agricultural products, eventuating establishing Jamestown as a boomtown. Once the colony had become stabilized, the first representative legislature general assembly met in the Jamestown church in 1619.
Jamestown and Plymouth were the first English colonies in America. Both settlements faced harsh conditions which included weather, starvation and disease. In addition, both colonies struggled in creating a stable society, economy and government. The location of these two colonies was also a determining factor in their survival. Both colonists settled in modern day America for different reasons but were driven by the same ambitions for a new life that would determine how long the colony would last.
