On November 4, 2011 there was a grand jury report released with testimonies stating that Penn State’s Defensive Coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, had been involved in the sexual assault of at least eight different young juvenile males over a period of approximately 15 years that spanned from 1994 to 2009. There were also allegations that leading officials of Penn State failed to notify law enforcement after learning that some of the incidents had taken place (Viera, M. 2011). In 1977, Jerry Sandusky initially founded a group Foster home for troubled boys known as “The Second Mile.”

Furthermore, once the Board Trustee finds out this information it should have cost crisis management their job too. On November 4, 2011, Jerry Sandusky, former defensive coordinator for Penn State, was accused of sexually abusing eight children during his time at Penn State. More news followed saying that officials at Penn State knew about the incidents, but failed to report any of it to law enforcement. Jerry Sandusky was with Penn State for a total of 32 years. In that time, his actions outside of football didn’t go completely unnoticed. In 1998, an 11-year-old boy told his mother that Sandusky showered with him and may have engaged in some inappropriate contact.
The NCAA takes away scholarships, as well as fines, suspends, and punishes programs for their wrongdoings. Though it was Jerry Sandusky who did the child molesting, Penn St had to pay a fine of $60 million (Layden). The Jerry Sandusky scandal happened from 1998-2011. Jerry Sandusky was an assistant coach at the university of Pennsylvania state. The scandal was about how Jerry Sandusky molested multiple children, and used the Second mile program to find the children.
Penn State football was once the pride of Pennsylvania. The Sandusky scandal changed all of that forever. The University had to learn many lessons. According to Layden, T. (2014), one of the biggest issues that caused the scandal to strive was the fact that those in charge probably felt the football program was too big to fail. In other words, they felt the success of the program was so important to the University and its fans that the scandal needed to be kept on a low profile.
One of the biggest problems the colleges were facing, were they did not want to prosecute, or handle a case if it deals with a student athlete. Although rape is rape, most campuses would investigate the athlete after the season was over in order to protect the school’s sport image. One example of a school not bringing justice for the victim, was a young lady named Erica Kinsman who went to Florida State University and was raped by the star football player. The police had the tested Erica, but when it came time to test her rapist they waited until they football team had won the game. Even after the game was over they still believe there was not enough evidence to say he did it.
It is hard to imagine that someone who had built a reputation for encouraging, assisting, and guiding juveniles could commit such heinous acts. On November 5, 2011, Jerry Sandusky’s life as he knew it would forever change, as he became a part of the judicial system (Bohm & Haley, 2014). On this day, Sandusky was charged and arrested with 40 counts of molesting children. These crimes were committed on eight different boys from 1994 to 2009.
The Jerry Sandusky trial began in 2012 and was held in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of 48 counts and sentenced to 30 to 60 years in jail (Curry, 2015). The details of the case are horrific in nature, and worse is five men were made aware of the incidents and no action was taken to alert authorities. During the trial the victims were led through questions that all pointed toward the trust they had in Sandusky. The university is located in a small town setting where people work hard and have little; Sandusky reaching out to someone was considered a big deal.
Both of which were not aware that he was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. You could very easily argue that as a teacher it is extremely difficult to pick up on treads and signals when you only see the students for nearly an hour a day. It is the major things that are spoon fed to those in authority where it is critical to be noticed. For one of Michael’s school assignment he wrote a paper explaining how embarrassed he felt when he was called gay in the school paper. In Figure 4:1 on page 93 he referenced various weapons and forms of violence such as “ using a sawed of shotgun and ak47 to shoot the mob of preps” (Newman et al., 2004:93).
Last summer, I was afforded the opportunity to take a three-day class on Title IX in Intercollegiate Athletics hosted by a former employee of the Office of Civil Rights, Ms. Valerie Bonnette. The class opened my eyes to the basic fundamentals of Title IX, key issues on college campuses and what I could do to make an immediate impact on the campus of Hampton University. The class broke down the understanding of the three prong test and with the recent additions of Women’s Soccer and Men’s Lacrosse. In addition to understanding Title IX’s effects on scholarships, budget, facilities and most importantly female student-athletes.
Colleges are protecting their public record and do not wish to affect their brand be publicly admitting the high rates of sexual assaults. The documentary focused on a student attending Harvard Law School and the administrators insisted that the female victim should remain silent and avoid spreading the incident around. They asked questions such as, "Did you give him the wrong message, why did you choose not to fight back". Victim blaming is presented when the administrators are more interested in what the victim did wrong rather than what the offender's actions
The lies they told the community affected the community and who they told the lie about instead of affecting the girls. The
