Jessica Chester was a high schooler in Garland, Texas. Chester had decided to attend the University of Texas-Dallas and to become a doctor. She was at the top of her class with a full tuition scholarship to UTD and a 4.5 GPA. Chester had a bright future ahead of her, but that was all till one day before her senior year when she missed her period. Chester went to buy a pregnancy test and took it quickly. When both lines had popped up, she started crying in her mother’s arms. After giving birth Chester had gotten pregnant again. Only after three months, Chester and her boyfriend (now husband) didn’t know that she could get pregnant so soon after giving birth. In a study it was found that “pledgers in that statistical universe had a 51 percent rate of being HPV positive, whereas only 33 percent of non predgers were found to be HPV positive” (UMass Amherst). Pledgers of abstinence almost had twice the rate of non-pledged, people that the other side would think of them being more at risk for an STDs. This high rate shows that stressing so much the importance of abstinence can cause a derail in the information on how to practice safe sex in addition to raising the STD rates. Abstinence failing can also be seen in “Mississippi… state with abstinence-only education mandated in public schools suffers from the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the country” (Helmick). High rates of teen pregnancy should be a red flag that something that schools are teaching is not working for their students. At this point it is just negligence towards the safety of students by not preparing teens for such events in the future. Abstinence seems to be doing the opposite of what it claims its benefits
