Ever since she wrote these stories, Rowling knew she wanted to become a writer (Steffens 17). Another significant event took place in Tutshill Church of English Primary School. There, Rowling had a teacher Mrs. Sylvia Morgan who had a rather interesting way of seating her students. She would give them a test at the beginning of the year and seat them according to her perception of their brightness. The smart students would be placed on the right side of the classroom, near the window, and the lesser so, on the left by the door. Rowling was put by the latter. She worked hard that year, and her teacher eventually moved her to the second rightmost seat, where her best friend had been sitting. “ In one short walk,” she said in an interview “ I became clever but unpopular.”. This teacher, was the biggest influence for her character Severus Snape ( Steffens 18 ). The idea for her books came to her when her bus had a delay and she was waiting for it to start up again. Rowling did not have any paper to right it down, so she just kept imagining the story and characters. The Federation of Children’s Books Group, located in the United Kingdom, finds that 84% of teachers say Harry Potter improves literacy among their students, and 67% say that the series turns non readers into readers ( Steffens 8). The 2006 Kids and Family Reading finds that 60% of readers ages 5-17 have read all or some of the Harry Potter series, and 76% of parents believe it makes an improvement in school performance ( Steffens 8 ).
