Is this change consistent with what you know about maturation? How?
Bobby, a character in Angela Johnson 's story The First Part Last, believes that that idea is how life should be. But the story addresses a different idea, coming of age. Bobby, being the main character, was the focus of that idea. By the end of the story, Bobby had become an adult by giving up his old sport, past- times, and always claiming Feather as his own. Bobby did come of age by the end of the story as he had given up on
Steinbeck has written The Red Pony and Of Mice and Men both of these books showing “coming-of-age” and “loss-of-innocence” can change people’s perspective on how you should act. Also how you know should act versus how you do act in certain situations. In The Red Pony Jody also starts to act more sustained and doesn’t freak out when things like when Billy decided to cut a creature's head, “Billy lifted the weak head and made a quick slash with the knife. Jody saw the yellow pus run out” (pg 153 RP).
In the book, growing up means being responsible for duties, being able to accept consequences for actions, and learning to do the right thing even when it is difficult. J.T had to learn to grow up and take on more responsibility working on his family’s chicken farm when his father was ill in the hospital. Brady had just found out that J.T.’s dad was in the hospital and he realized how much this might affect J.T. Brady says “I could see the pain he had bottled up inside. Because of his dad? The sweat dripping off his face could have been tears for all I knew” (102).
“Growing up happens when you start having things you look back on and wish you could change.” This quote by John Green shows that coming of age is a time for both discovery and regret which we all must take. Coming of age is when one evolves as a person and experiences a new perspective that impacts them. Lily from the book The Secret Life of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd. finds a new identity that doesn’t revolve around her father's actions and perception of her.
"I still remember that moment of self-discovery, standing at the crossroads between childhood innocence and adult responsibility”. Coming of age is when a person is in an area of transition. A person might go through loss and identity during the coming of age.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, growing up means to grow towards or arrive at full stature or physical or mental maturity. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, 3 children experience some growing up in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s, the Great Depression. This growing up is seen through the eyes of Scout Finch. She sees her brother Jem, grow up in responsibility. She sees her friend, Dill, grow up in courage.
“Maturity isn’t a product of growing older, it’s a product of growing wiser.” This quote shows it’s not about getting older, it’s about improving yourself. Coming of age is the development of a person as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. Two components of coming of age that I am using are experiencing loss and experiencing love. The main character is Will and the author is Jason Reynolds.
What affects a main character’s progression towards maturity in a novel? John Steinbeck’s The Red Pony establishes character maturity through the main character, Jody Tiflin. Throughout the book, the main character matures during each section of the book, and as he develops, he also gains knowledge about the world around him and how it works. Jody’s maturity in The Red Pony by John Steinbeck is affected by the symbolism of the book.
Maturity is the feeling of needing to prove that one is sophisticated and old enough to do certain things. In the short story “Growing Up,” Maria’s family went on a vacation while she stayed at home, but when she heard there was a car crash that happened near where her family was staying, she gets worried and thinks it is all her fault for trying to act mature and angering her father. Society wants to prove how mature they are and they do so by trying to do things that older people do and the symbols, conflict, and metaphors in the text support this theme. First and foremost, in “Growing Up,” Gary Soto’s theme is how society acts older than they are and that they just want to prove they are mature. Maria wants to stay home instead of going
Ultimately, Marji learns that it is not independence, but grown-up actions of compassion, that define maturity. Marji’s forgiveness of Ramin, and her experience with the Guardian’s gesture of sympathy all teach her that maturity is derived from positive actions, and she must contribute acts of kindness before she can become an adult. Throughout the novel, Marji observes adults participate in questionable actions in response to unfavorable circumstances before realizing the difference between getting older and coming-of-age. Those who experience the latter are admirable, and compassionate benefactors,

Maturity is a concept that ample adults have had difficulty incorporating into the lives of their children.
