John Brown can be portrayed as a heroic freedom fighter that selflessly fought for the enslaved Africans in the United States of America, but however his righteous actions can be observed as acts of terrorism. John Brown is often misrepresented as a noble hero and should be shown as blood thirsty killer. He slaughtered people in the name of freedom for the slaves. He captured an armory, and other military buildings and gave out guns to the slaves so that they could rise up against the enslavers. He then held people hostage and killed off the people that fought against him. He was then brought to court and received a death sentence. Lee’s report on the situation paints John Brown as a criminal. He has reported that John Brown had taken over armory, he sent out men to capture important people, and had the slaves join his cause. The men led by John Brown used hostages to secure a safe escape from the soldiers, this show that John Brown is not a hero because he put innocent lives at risk. Moreover, Robert E. Lee offered that if John Brown surrendered to their terms, because he did not want the hostages to get hurt, and as he predicted they did not surrender, which lead to their doom. John Brown lead a charge against the soldiers and killed their officer, this action contradicts John Brown statement of not wanting to kill people it shows the opposite because of his front line position. The raid happened because John Brown opposed the soldiers by attacking them, and the soldiers were ordered to kill them if they showed aggression. He could have avoided this bloodshed if he just followed their commands, but he did not because he desperately wanted his abolitionist views to take action in the South.
