Treason, the act betraying one’s country or attempt to overthrow the government. John Brown did no such thing as a peaceful approach would gain nothing. Document B: Last Meeting Between Frederick Douglass and John Brown; Although the plan to attack a Federal Arsenal was “a measure to be fatal” according to Frederick Douglass. Despite the fact of taking the peculiar measures to end slavery, Brown still went through with his plans. When Brown and his men were either killed or captured people had mixed thoughts and feelings toward them.
John Brown Hero or Villain The story of John Brown happened many years ago, yet it still puzzles historians today. John Brown was an anti-slave abolitionist who was put to death after pleading guilty of murder, but is he considered a hero or a villain? John Brown is a villain for three simple reason, he murdered many different people, he attacked a federal arsenal, and he could be considered a terrorist. The first reason John Brown is a villain is because he murdered many different people.
“John Brown was known as a madman who used excessive force in order to achieve his goals” says Joseph R. Gilmore, but who was John Brown? John Brown was an abolitionist trying to free slaves, except he did that with so much violence and killing innocent people. It was also later revealed that those weren’t even his true intentions. This information is very important since most people think that he was an amazing person who just wanted to free slaves, but that was not the whole truth. John Brown was a villain because he killed innocent people and took them captive, he lied about everything in court, and he tried to start a civil war.
John Brown was a good man. He fought for what he believed in and he had good intentions. Brown did the things he did to help free slaves. John Brown was not a terrorist. He was a freedom fighter.
Figures such as William Lloyd Garrison and John Brown played a large role in strengthening the abolitionist movement. Garrison was a white abolitionist who wrote The Liberator, which held the message of emancipation of slaves. John Brown was an abolitionist who took matters into physical hands and started what was soon to be called Bleeding Kansas when he took a few of his followers and killed five men to send a message. These two men were few of many who helped stir support and cultivate power for the movement to get slavery abolished. Southerners presumed true that the Northerners were teaching the kids to hate the Southerner’s kids, which had started disagreement at a young age.
John Brown should be considered a traitor for three reasons, he killed five people, he led a revolt, and he armed slaves. The first reason, John Brown killed five people. He, in cold blood killed 5 white men in a field for what? Owning slaves?
Many people either think John Brown was a terrorist or a freedom fighter. There are many facts to show both. I believe Brown was a freedom fighter. Evidence Brown was a freedom fighter and not a terrorist. John Brown wanted to fight against slave owners.
He was willing to die to make something happen, he went with a few men to conquer an armory, although he was not aware of the fact the probability of death was way higher than he thought because of his insanity, but he still knew that there was chance of death. The South thought John Brown was a terrorist. They state that he was evil for murdering a lot of citizens because some of them may have not treated their slaves that bad, and it is just plain evil to kill for no reason. This is not true.
Nick Baxter What caused the Civil War? DBQ The Civil War was caused by three main reasons are economic differences, interpretation of Constitution, and moral beliefs. The North and the South were very different economically.
John Brown: Freedom Fighter or Terrorist In the world today there are many definitions of terrorism, but there is not one definition for terrorism because not everyone can agree on one. I believe John Brown is a freedom fighter, but the actions he attempted like at Harper's Ferry and Pottawatomie Creek is most likely to be a terrorist act. When John Brown was young he lived in a religious family. John Brown memorized the Bible and strongly believed in God.
John Brown was a Villain. “John Brown was not only a murderer of innocent persons, but he attempted one of the greatest crimes against society -- the stirring of a servile and civil war” (Document H). John Brown’s actions have caused many people to suffer injuries or even death. He’s caused many problems and committed crimes including treason, murder, and destruction of property. This is important because he was the spark that started the first modern war, the Civil War.
John Brown understood what he was dealing with and who he was dealing with; he knew that if violence was not used, the South would not feel threatened, thus furthering the ideology of slavery. Brown being tired of waiting, he knew he needed to act quickly before slavery would get worse, or because of his selfish deeds like the North taking control over Congress instead of the South. However, such excuse is not justifiable since many like Frederick Douglass were able to use the power of words in order to spread justice. The fact alone that Brown was a white male gave him a step forward for change, but despite his power, he chose the path to bloodshed. On the other hand, Douglass was an African American in which he was shut down by many just because of his race.
In the United States, during the eighteen-hundreds’, a small group of people believed that slavery was immoral and did many things to abolish it. John Brown, a Caucasian male who was part of this group of people, did two things that many people in United States history didn’t have the passion to do. John Brown’s life was very interesting: His early life and transition to adulthood, his decision to fight for the cause, his actions of violence in Kansas and Harper’s Ferry, along with, the long-lasting effects of these actions led to his hanging. These events were pivotal to the beginning of the Civil War. “John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut, on May 9, 1800, five months after the death of George Washington”(Marrin,7).
During the raid a free African American who was guarding the arsenal tried to warn a train full of passengers and was shot and killed by one of Browns men in the process. Two of John Browns sons were shot and killed during the shootout, Brown and his men were outnumbered and fled. Not only did the raid at Harpers Ferry failed, things got worse for Brown when word got out to the public that he was responsible of the killing of a free African American. He was then hated by everyone who once supported him in the cause to end slavery. In my opinion I would have supported John brown and his cause to end slavery.
Looking at what he has fought for, it’s no doubt that he fought for a noble cause which is the freedom of slavery. John Brown shouldn’t be known as hero or terrorists because of want he has done applies to both sides. John Brown shouldn’t be known as a terrorist or a national hero because of his violent attack and raids. After, September 11, 2001 John Brown has been called a terrorist which has caused controversy about Brown’s legacy and reputation. Furthermore, in the article, The 9/11 of 1859 says, “He led 21 men all but two in their 20s, and many of them radicalized by guerilla fighting in Bleeding Kansas, the abolitionists’ Afghanistan”(Horowitz).
