Although John Brown tries to end slavery, which is a good deed, he does use violence, and murder people who are innocent; therefore, John Brown is guilty of murder, treason, and insurrections. John Brown not only starts a very violent insurrection, almost like a war. He also brutally murders people who are just in his way. Insurrection means a violent uprising against authority.
John Brown killed half of an innocent family who did not own slaves because they were pro-slavery. John Brown was an abolitionist who killed many people. John Brown also committed treason. This topic is important because John Brown started the civil war, so it is important to know about him if he was a hero or villain. John Brown was a villain because he killed innocent people, he committed treason, and he was very untrustworthy.

John Brown was an anti-slave abolitionist who was put to death after pleading guilty of murder, but is he considered a hero or a villain? John Brown is a villain for three simple reason, he murdered many different people, he attacked a federal arsenal, and he could be considered a terrorist. The first reason John Brown is a villain is because he murdered many different people.
I think John Brown was a hero, because he tried to find ways to free slaves. Even though he killed people or got people killed in the process, he still was trying his best to help free slaves. Supplying the slaves with weapons was a good idea, but did not turn out they way he wanted. Everyone messes up, but he still had this plan to try and help free slaves.
The persona of John Brown is a mystery. His biography reveals a man who wasdedicated throughout his life to the cause of equality for African Americans, and he wentto the extent of giving his life for it. He was marked as a singular example of a white manwho died for the cause of black freedom. His actions, however insecurely they may have been grounded in reason, undeniably made an impact. His consistency in perpetuating theabolition movement by any means was a major reason for pushing the nation into war.
John Brown was a villain because he murdered people, lied about many important things, and stole things. First of all, he murdered 5 people. In Document E, the letter from Mahala Doyle, she mentions that he killed her husband and 2 of her sons, although they had never owned slaves. He also killed two other people. This shows that even though he claimed to be murdered in the name of slavery, he wasn’t.
Many people either think John Brown was a terrorist or a freedom fighter. There are many facts to show both. I believe Brown was a freedom fighter. Evidence Brown was a freedom fighter and not a terrorist. John Brown wanted to fight against slave owners.

John Brown was a well-known abolitionist in the Bleeding Kansas time period.
He was willing to die to make something happen, he went with a few men to conquer an armory, although he was not aware of the fact the probability of death was way higher than he thought because of his insanity, but he still knew that there was chance of death. They state that he was evil for murdering a lot of citizens because some of them may have not treated their slaves that bad, and it is just plain evil to kill for no reason. This is not true.

Mahala Doyle said in a letter to Brown, ... you then and there entered my house at midnight and arrested my husband and two boys, and took them out of the yard and in cold blood shot them dead in my hearing. You can't say you done it to free slaves.
Many tributes were paid to him following his death and most Northerners believed that he truly was a good man who didn’t deserve to be hanged. Many Church Bells were tolled, people held memorial services, Negro businesses were closed and multiple people wore black armbands in sign of respect. Southerners on the other hand, despised Brown and believed that he was very foolish for the acts he committed. Robert E. Lee, one of the Southerners, said that Brown’s death could have been prevented if he just didn’t use as much violence. Lee later said that he believed that the blacks who helped Brown, during the raid were forced to help and didn’t have a choice.
Looking at what he has fought for, it’s no doubt that he fought for a noble cause which is the freedom of slavery. John Brown shouldn’t be known as hero or terrorists because of want he has done applies to both sides. John Brown shouldn’t be known as a terrorist or a national hero because of his violent attack and raids. After, September 11, 2001 John Brown has been called a terrorist which has caused controversy about Brown’s legacy and reputation. Furthermore, in the article, The 9/11 of 1859 says, “He led 21 men all but two in their 20s, and many of them radicalized by guerilla fighting in Bleeding Kansas, the abolitionists’ Afghanistan”(Horowitz).
Through his writings, Brown tells us he had no doubt in his intentions being for the better, choosing to ignore these lives lost as they didn’t serve to further his cause. Scott John Hammond tell us about John Brown’s calculated nature by comparing him to Machiavellian philosophies, a philosophy associated with the use of power in often ruthless means, “Given the fact that all founders and reformers will inevitably encounter resistance from those enemies … Machiavelli notes that a lawgiver … must go forth armed and prepared for struggle” and “A founder is consonant with the idea of virtue, or grandeur of soul - a character of extraordinary proportions, defined in terms of “ingenuity, skill, and excellence.”
